The Dolphins may end up in a pretty good spot at #14 in the draft. Two potential elite players could be there giving Miami two very different options. I'm not convinced the team would take either. Dorial Green-Beckham has character red-flags, while Todd Gurley had been injured two straight seasons. But if the team can look past that they also could end up with a real difference maker. So who would you take between the two?

A closer look:

Dorial Green-Beckham
Think always open even when covered. If the average corner is about 5-11 then DGB has 6+ inches to his advantage. He has about 3 inches on the biggest corners. It's comforting for a quarterback to know if he has to throw the ball up that his guy has the best chance. Miami doesn't have a player like that on the roster. Ryan Tannehill wouldn't have to be perfect with his throws. DGB could be a huge matchup problem and really help in the redzone. Oh and he combines 4.4 speed with his nearly 6-6 frame! We know the red-flags are there, but it also sounds like he may have matured over the last year. He also hasn't played football for a season so expecting him to contribute in a big way right away may not happen. There are safer options that could be there such as DaVante Parker (love Parker) and Jalen Strong (warming up to him).

Todd Gurley
I have to be honest, I've wanted Gurley on the Dolphins the first time I saw him play. He is indeed a special back combining power, speed, balance and receiving skills out of the backfield. While a player like DGB is always open due to his size, Gurley is that back that can get 1-2 yards on his own and keep the chains moving. A one yard run for a first down may not show up in highlights, but having a player who can get those at a better than average NFL rate is huge. I love Bill Lazor's system and how it allows running backs to be successful. I think a lot of Miami's running success in 2014 was scheme driven. With a back like Gurley, Miami can dictate the running game rather than scheme for it. The ACL injury is a concern and his four game suspension may be a minor concern as well. Also, I recognize that there are a lot of talented backs in the draft that the Dolphins could get later.

Thoughts?

I'd think if the top 4 receivers are gone at 14 go Gurley, but it does seem crazy to draft someone that high off a surgery. I just hope we get a good skill player this high.

Just because of durability....I'd go Gordon if we go runningback.

I think were going to have to have a pretty active free agency to have that luxury though.

I believe the only reason Gurley falls to 14 now is because he was injured. No injury this year, I believe he would not make it past 10. Not a huge Gordon fan but I would not be pissed either if we decide to go that route.

Would be interesting to know how coachable is DGB? One thing that keeps getting mentioned is he has no idea what he is doing at WR. Do not believe we would see a lot of return on our pick in the near time we went this route.

I like them both but I think there is a very small chance we select either one. Our staff have their jobs on the line this season and will select a "safer" pick. They will both go to a good team with an established head coach where the risk is lower for said coach. A la belicheck, Reid, harbaugh, or Pete Carroll.

I do tend to agree with this and, obviously, a lot depends on free agency. If Miami has a huge hole at defensive tackle going into the draft, I'd expect someone like Malcom Brown at #14.

The team has been need driven in the draft and there are a lot of needs. Running back is kind of lower on the list. I think going against the physical defenses in the AFC East that a player like Gurley would be huge for Miami, though.

The assumptions here are rediculous.

Anyone know any update on Gurley's knee? It would be naive to take Gurley without knowing and DBG has serious character flaws. Apparently people around here dont give a lick about character.

The last update on Gurley was that he's 6 weeks ahead of schedule. Based on when he got hurt he "should" be back for preseason. Maybe training camp...just hard to say since we can't see his medicals. I don't think the Dolphins will...but I'd take him at 14. Only way I wouldn't is if we lose Wallace which basically forces us to go WR

Wouldn't touch Gurley until the second round.

He's probably not going to make it to the second round so he's now someone else's problem.

Not downplaying the ACL, it's definitely a concern. But players come back from that at a real good rate these days to the point where it's certainly not as major an injury as it was in the past.

When healthy, I'm not sure there's a better player in the draft than Todd Gurley.

If the only thing DGB figures out to do year one is catch fades inside the 10 then we will get every penny spent on him. Its the biggest flaw on our team. We leave ten points at least on the field every game because of our wr size.

True. Maybe the team gambles more with Tannabaum (sp) on board, but I would still expect a more conservative pick like Jalen Strong. That wouldn't be a bad way to go.

I'm still hoping for Gurley. Just think he changes the entire offense for Miami.

I think Gurley would be a luxury pick, which we can't afford, especially a luxury pick coming off an ACL tear. We have bigger needs at CB, WR, OL, and LB, IMO. CB needs to be handled early in the draft, whether or not we are able to sign anyone in FA, and I'd much rather take a WR at 14 than any of the RB's. RB can be addressed in FA or the later rounds of the draft.
