The Dolphins may end up in a pretty good spot at #14 in the draft. Two potential elite players could be there giving Miami two very different options. I'm not convinced the team would take either. Dorial Green-Beckham has character red-flags, while Todd Gurley had been injured two straight seasons. But if the team can look past that they also could end up with a real difference maker. So who would you take between the two?
A closer look:
Dorial Green-Beckham
Think always open even when covered. If the average corner is about 5-11 then DGB has 6+ inches to his advantage. He has about 3 inches on the biggest corners. It's comforting for a quarterback to know if he has to throw the ball up that his guy has the best chance. Miami doesn't have a player like that on the roster. Ryan Tannehill wouldn't have to be perfect with his throws. DGB could be a huge matchup problem and really help in the redzone. Oh and he combines 4.4 speed with his nearly 6-6 frame! We know the red-flags are there, but it also sounds like he may have matured over the last year. He also hasn't played football for a season so expecting him to contribute in a big way right away may not happen. There are safer options that could be there such as DaVante Parker (love Parker) and Jalen Strong (warming up to him).
Todd Gurley
I have to be honest, I've wanted Gurley on the Dolphins the first time I saw him play. He is indeed a special back combining power, speed, balance and receiving skills out of the backfield. While a player like DGB is always open due to his size, Gurley is that back that can get 1-2 yards on his own and keep the chains moving. A one yard run for a first down may not show up in highlights, but having a player who can get those at a better than average NFL rate is huge. I love Bill Lazor's system and how it allows running backs to be successful. I think a lot of Miami's running success in 2014 was scheme driven. With a back like Gurley, Miami can dictate the running game rather than scheme for it. The ACL injury is a concern and his four game suspension may be a minor concern as well. Also, I recognize that there are a lot of talented backs in the draft that the Dolphins could get later.
