I really think Tony Sparano is a great coach, and it's my understanding he too, is going through a learning process as a head coach in the NFL, but in yesterday's game I was thinking he may have blew it by making a rookie mistake.
Why did he call timeout with 5 seconds left before the 1st half after the review. The Saints were out of timeouts, so why did Sparano do them a favor in calling a timeout for them.
I think this was a crucial call, as I tend to see this call as the turning point in the game.
Here's what I saw and what I'm thinking happened.....
There was 5 seconds remaining before the half, while the Instant play review was going on, you could see on TV Payton and Brees debating as to whether or not they should go for it. I was sitting there thinking to myself "ok as soon as the review is over, start the clock immedietley and pressure them to make a quicker decision", this would force the saints to either A) hurry up and kick the field goal or B) come to the line of scrimmage unprepared, either way it would've forced the Saints to make a decision quicker.
The reason I say this is because I thought I heard one of the announcers from the game say the Saints had their kicking unit out on the field while the play was in review and with no timeouts, they may have been looking at a delay of game or a pressured play calling decision.
Instead, Right before the players hit the field, I see some of our Dolphins players and Sparano using the "timeout" hand signs on the sideline and I'm honestly sitting there thinking, "I hope they are not calling timeout and it is simply a defensive play they are signaling to out players on the field". But then I saw our players on the field doing the same hand signals and sure enough they were calling for a timeout!
This pissed me off. Why in the F*** would you call a timeout with 5 seconds left and they have no timeouts!? Sparano just did them a favor by A) stopping the clock and letting them re-think the Field goal and B) letting them settle down and dial in the right play with no pressure.
Now, there could only be 2 logical explanations I would think Sparano called a timeout for, either A) he was not prepared for the kicking unit by having the defense out on the field instead of the Special Teams unit or B) he had too many men out on the field.
However, in either case, I would have had my goal line defense stay out on the field despite the Saints kicking a FG. And if there were too many players on the field, I let Drew Brees snap it and chew more time off the clock and take the penalty (how much more could've they pushed the ball forward with a penalty?)
Bottom line is, I saw this as the turning point in the game. I felt after this call, everything began to go downhill and it began to seem as if we were trying to simply hold on to the lead as much as we could therafter.
