I really think Tony Sparano is a great coach, and it's my understanding he too, is going through a learning process as a head coach in the NFL, but in yesterday's game I was thinking he may have blew it by making a rookie mistake.

Why did he call timeout with 5 seconds left before the 1st half after the review. The Saints were out of timeouts, so why did Sparano do them a favor in calling a timeout for them.

I think this was a crucial call, as I tend to see this call as the turning point in the game.

Here's what I saw and what I'm thinking happened.....

There was 5 seconds remaining before the half, while the Instant play review was going on, you could see on TV Payton and Brees debating as to whether or not they should go for it. I was sitting there thinking to myself "ok as soon as the review is over, start the clock immedietley and pressure them to make a quicker decision", this would force the saints to either A) hurry up and kick the field goal or B) come to the line of scrimmage unprepared, either way it would've forced the Saints to make a decision quicker.

The reason I say this is because I thought I heard one of the announcers from the game say the Saints had their kicking unit out on the field while the play was in review and with no timeouts, they may have been looking at a delay of game or a pressured play calling decision.

Instead, Right before the players hit the field, I see some of our Dolphins players and Sparano using the "timeout" hand signs on the sideline and I'm honestly sitting there thinking, "I hope they are not calling timeout and it is simply a defensive play they are signaling to out players on the field". But then I saw our players on the field doing the same hand signals and sure enough they were calling for a timeout!

This pissed me off. Why in the F*** would you call a timeout with 5 seconds left and they have no timeouts!? Sparano just did them a favor by A) stopping the clock and letting them re-think the Field goal and B) letting them settle down and dial in the right play with no pressure.

Now, there could only be 2 logical explanations I would think Sparano called a timeout for, either A) he was not prepared for the kicking unit by having the defense out on the field instead of the Special Teams unit or B) he had too many men out on the field.

However, in either case, I would have had my goal line defense stay out on the field despite the Saints kicking a FG. And if there were too many players on the field, I let Drew Brees snap it and chew more time off the clock and take the penalty (how much more could've they pushed the ball forward with a penalty?)

Bottom line is, I saw this as the turning point in the game. I felt after this call, everything began to go downhill and it began to seem as if we were trying to simply hold on to the lead as much as we could therafter.

I agree with this as well, also there was a crucial mistake by the refs. We should have gotten the ball at the 20 from a touchback, instead they give the Saints a touchdown.

my short version is the timeout was a mistake but oh well. sparano has to learn like everyone else.

It probably shifted the momentum. But it didn't directly cost us the game. People are going way over board with this fire Sparano crap.

Um how bout the logical reasoning that maybe it was a fake?

They tried that **** earlier on a punt and we called a timeout.

I do not blame him. Rookie mistake my ***. It should not of been ruled a TD and time expires. If it was a fake how many people would cry and moan that we should of called a timeout. Let it go, that was not the turning point. The pick 6 by sharper and his fumble into the endzone was the turning point. Or hell, Bess's fumble that didnt happen was.

I love that everyone has to go for it on 4th downs and **** against us because they think its madden.

They wouldn't have faked it and risked leaving points on the field. It was Brees who tried to talk Payton into going for it rather than kicking it, you could clearly see that on the telecast. I'm sure they weren't discussing how to fake it. It was a mistake by Sparano, but not one that cost us the game.

Sparano said in his presser earlier today that he flat out made a mistake and should have just went with the personnel he had on the field.

It is obvious Sparano had the defense out there because he expected them to go for it. He called timeout to get the special teams unit out there.

I'll give him props for admitting that he made a big mistake.

I think so too.

And don't get me wrong, this thread was in no way shape or form trying to imply Sparano should get fired. As I stated before, I think he is and will be a great coach for years to come (he is by far the best coach we've had since Shula), but I was simply pointing out his mistake and how I thought that everything went downhill from there.

I think you said it best, that changed the momentum.

You make a good point. I never thought about a fake, however, whatever the case may have been, I would have sent or kept my goal line defense out there regardless of their call, fake or no fake. And your also right, I would've sent my Goal line D out there on Madden as well, kick or no kick.

I would have traded for Michael Vick, put him as my 2nd string QB (so he can hold) and done a fake FG run with the QB!

Watch his press conference...he has taken ownership for that call and seems to realize that he shouldn't have called the TO.

I do the fake pass and keep hittin X, never fails.

It ended up working against us but I mean come on. It was more than a TD that was the reason we lost.
