I have been advised by a member of the site leadership that quoting only a portion of someone's post is impermissible pursuant to the TOS. I wish to establish for the record whether this is correct or not.

I understand that I may not alter the words of another, but it has long been the practice of members here to select only a portion of a response to quote and respond to. Is this permissible?

ETA: To be clear here, we are talking about a multi-paragraph selection of text. It included an example cited to weaken my argument and a new argument. I quoted the example only and explained how it actually strengthened my argument. I fell silent about the new argument.

I think it wouldn't be right to do so if you take it out of context. If you quote an excerpt of a post that is pertinent to discussion, that's fine. Just don't leave out stuff that makes his argument different if you do so.

I have seen Mods and Admins recommend not quoting the entire contents of a long post because of the time it takes to scroll through it.

Logic would indicate that its OK to quote portions of a post as long as the quote is not taken out of context or the words are not altered.

We're talking about quoting entire paragraphs here and leaving other entire paragraphs out. I understand not taking something out of context.

Is this the extent of what we need to worry about?

yes

I notice this has actually caused warning points to be incurred. I will want to take this up with an admin in detail. Any suggestions as to which admin I should do that with?

I already explained this to you, and I already told you that Admins were copied on my reply to your PM to me.

Like I said, what you did violated the ToS because you omitted language from your quote of my post because it was inconvenient to the point you were trying to argue. That is in violation of the rule against altering text, because the net effect of your action was the same as if you had actually physically altered text.

I will not argue this further with you in any public forum. You are free to continue to appeal to everyone and anyone, and I'm sure that you'll find no shortage of diversity of opinions on the matter.

But understand that it is my opinion and interpretation of the ToS that is pertinent here, not yours - and certainly not one in which you'd like to take advantage of the letter of the rules in order to circumvent their spirit.

I'm looking at everything right now. Give me 24 hours to sort it out, please.

I took your points away.

What TT and Mindwart told you previously, in this thread, is the bottom line.

We'll make sure that the entire staff uses the same interpretation in the future.
