NFL owners voted earlier this month to push back the trade deadline by two weeks — from the day after Week 6 to the day after Week 8.

The extra two weeks don’t seem like much — the trade deadline still seems to early to help a team down the stretch — but Sports Illustrated’s Peter King writes today that the two extra weeks could have completely changed the 2011 season and the future of the NFL.


With two extra weeks, King writes that the Colts probably would have traded for Kyle Orton, which would have probably won the Colts a few extra games, which probably would have put Andrew Luck in a different uniform this fall.


So now you know: The trade deadline this year will be on Monday, Oct. 29 — the day after the Dolphins play at the Jets.
 
I'm with King on this. The trade deadline should be pushed back to Dec 1 to generate trades by teams looking to add that piece for a playoff run. Trades in the NFL are by far the worst of the 4 major sports.

One of the reasons it's the worst of the 4 major sports is because of the NFL's hard salary cap. I don't know if pushing back the trade deadline will make that much of a difference seeing as how the trade has to make sense financially for both teams and since the NFLPA incorporated into the new contract that all teams have to spend 98% of their cap or more it's going to make trades even more difficult.

As I have said before the players negotiating for teams to spend 98% of the cap was extremely near sighted. Not only will it make trades more difficult but free agency will be much more difficult as teams will be up against the cap as it is and more inclined to re-sign their own players to larger contracts rather than go after high priced free agents on the market...especially if the money won't be there for them. We're supposed to be something like $60 million under the projected cap next year but that's with 26 or 27 players signed. We'll have to use $60 million to sign 6 or 7 rookies and another 20 some free agents...it works out to less than $3 million per player. You sign a Mario Williams to a 6-year, $100 million contract (about $16 million per season) then you've just reduced your $60 million to $44 million for another 25 players and now you're down to less than $2 million per player...that's a lot of 3rd tier players on your roster if you go the high priced free agent route...and forget signing two high priced free agents...the roster will be crap.
 
I'm not a NBA fan anyway but some of these sports allow trades so late it is just weird. I would not feel warm and fuzzy if we had the chance of overtaking another team to get into the playoffs and then they trade for two players off of losing teams for a 4 game gain at the end of the season. Plus, football is a true team sport, you cannot just plug someone in like you can in other sports.

Makes sense. Lotta injuries happen past mid-season, perfect time to wheel and deal.
