Although Hudson Houck has done a wonderful job with this line, I still think we need at least one more upgrade to become a dominant line. We need a big, mean nasty bulldozer to set the stage and help the line become a bunch of street thugs that runs over teams.

Max Jean-Gilles is one of the best I've seen in recent memory. A consistent mauler who eats defensive linemen for lunch. A man with an attitude. If we could pick him up, it may set off an interesting chain effect. If McKinney leaves via free agency (I think he will), we move Hadnot to center. Hadnot was an excellent center/guard in college and gives us a bulldozer in the middle. Something I feel we have needed since the great Dwight Stephenson played center. Ruddy and McKinney were/are simply too soft.

I think between McIntosh, Carey and maybe Alabi we will be alright at the tackle position. Carey seems to be suited for LT because he is a good pass blocker and fair run blocker. McIntosh is just the opposite. He seems better suited for RT. So maybe next year's line could look like this:

LT - Vernon Carey
LG - Jeno James
C - Rex Hadnot
RG - Max Jean-Gilles
RT - Damion McIntosh

This lineup makes sense to me. Carey is being paid LT dollars. McIntosh is a great run blocker, combined with Jean-Gilles, Ronnie would be good for at least 1500 yards next year. Hadnot would also give us a push up the middle we haven't had in years.

Maybe we trade down (for draft picks), pick up Jean-Gilles, and solidify the line. There will be a lot of good LB's and DB's we can pick up later in the draft. We get a WR and CB via free agency. As far as QB - you roll the dice and let Mueller figure that one out. They're hard to find.

i like giles, but not enough to trade down for him and lose a potentially great player in the top 10

When you fall in love, you get screwed. That's often the problem with falling in love with a top pick (see Dave Wannstedt). Trading down and picking up extra draft picks for a team that may win only 5 games this year makes sense to me. Did you look at the line with Jean-Gilles? We could be dominant for years. All great teams are built around a great O-line. We'll find good players in later rounds, especially if we have extra picks to work with.

I think Carey is being paid guard dollars.

our line is good right now. i'd rather get a great quarterback or a great player on defense and get a lineman later in the draft

most teams DO build around their line, but not with first-rounders

Most teams dont have HH either.

Good is not good enough for a run-oriented coach and an OL coach who wants bull dozers. Trade down for Gilles and get extra picks. We need a lot right now.

We didn't do squat for HH this year. He is a master, but he's not a magician. Give him one blue chipper to work with and watch him make this line one of the very best in the NFL. Again, I wouldn't suggest Jean-Gilles unless we get some picks or players by trading down. That's the key to selecting him. Also, with McKinney possibly leaving via free agency, Hadnot may be moving over to center.

I do agree that we should upgrade our line but I dont think we have to do it on the first day when we have a line coach like HH. As far as Saban being a run-oriented coach I dont think that necessarly true.

I agree. He's not worth the 1st round pick when we have James and Hadnot there. Also he could possibly fall to the 2nd round, so hey we could have a shot at him in the 2nd round.

A team with wins of 4 and probably 5 in back to back years does not spend a first on a freaking Guard.

The team has tons of more pressing needs than a Guard. Though I don't think Jamoes nor Hadnot has been great this year.
