Looks like we aren't going to wait until June.

The Dolphins and the Detroit Lions have been in discussions during the weekend that could result in quarterback Joey Harrington being traded to the team in time to begin organized training activities in Miami by May 15, according to two sources.

The Dolphins had pulled an offer of a 2007 sixth-round pick for Harrington off the table earlier this week after Lions president Matt Millen wrongly complained that the Dolphins had violated the collective bargaining agreement in reaching a restructured contract with Harrington.

The Dolphins were prepared to wait until Harrington gets cut by Detroit in June to sign him. However, both sides appear to have relented.

The Dolphins had originally offered a seventh-round pick this year, then offered the pick in 2007. It's unknown what the deal might be at this point.

Dolphins coach Nick Saban declined to comment about the situation until the matter is resolved.

Interesting....Saban offered a 2007 7th rounder, not a 6th rounder as previously reported....

nah, I see how it's worded confusingly but, I don't think it's meant like that...

The Dolphins had pulled an offer of a 2007 sixth-round pick for Harrington off the table earlier this week

then later...

The Dolphins had originally offered a seventh-round pick this year, then offered the pick in 2007.

I believe that "the pick in 2007" is in reference to the 6th rounder the writer mentioned previously.

why?

Why would Saban give up a pick in next years draft when we can get Harrington for free in a month? I know that one month of extra time with the dolphins would be optimal, but is it worth a draft pick??

I think giving up a 7th for him wont hurt too much. Get him in camp as early as possible so he can learn the system in case he has to start the first week or two of the season.

its going to be like a lavar thing. the lions are going to never trade him to us and we are going to be stuck w/ nothing.

To me that shows the staff still does not feel Culpepper will be ready for the opener.

That extra month of playbook study time for Harrington is CRUCIAL if he is going to start the season for us.

Well worth a late draft pick to try and save what looks to be a promising season.

Why on earth would the Lions even reopen talks with us.
Millen is between a rock and a hard place.

The QB market has cooled quite a bit.
The Lions are going to have to release him anyway and THEY are the ones who will get nothing.
Harrington told them he only wants to come here and proved it by ruining a trade to Cleveland.

The only question in my mind is when do we get the guy.

In other news: CUlpepper is now running and throwing...making the handoffs...taking 5 step drops...and I dont care about anything else. 3 more months of rehabing and working out and none of this jibber jabber will mean anything.

You answered your own question. He needs to be here so he can get familiar with the team and they can get to know him, he needs to learn the playbook and he needs to work on his timing with the WR. IMO, it would be worth the a 6th round pick. I also think Joey wants this new chance to work out so he can prove himself. We could parlay Harringon into a higher DP if he plays well. He's a pro QB with loads of game experience, if he plays well we could get a first day pick for him. I don't worry at all about what he did in Detroit because that team is a frikin joke from the FO down to the waterboy. IMO Harrington will restore his rep to at least respectable in our system. Whens the last time you saw Gus play as well as he did last year in Miami??

Not really. You just want the guy to know the system. He's the #2. Brian went thru the same mess when we grabbed him. He needs time to learn it, and if Cul isn't ready, is that much more important to get him here early. In no way does that indicate what Cul's status is.
