I know there are many good opinions about what we need to do with that precious #9 pick... and there will no doubt be some future pro-bowlers on the board to choose from, but how about this line of thinking?

The Bucs have the number 4 pick, and it is widely predicted that Calvin Johnson will still be on the board and the Bucs will select him. The number 4 pick is worth 2000 value points on most boards. If we bundled our #9, our #60, and our #71, that totals 1950. While not quite 2000, it has additional value in allowing 3 good picks versus 1, and still one in the top 10. Would they do it?, Maybe, maybe not, but I'd offer and would trade them if they accepted.
Why? I know we are not one player away, but I would consider this a two season rebuilding effort, and here is my thinking:
1) we make that trade, we will have 7 picks, with a 2nd at #40 and a 4th at #86. These are close to being a low 1st and 3rd.
2) we have question marks at QB that will not be answered before the start of training camp, but it is possible that DC, Green, or Lemon will actually work out. And we will still probably draft a development guy in later rounds. In any case, Russell will be off the board.
3) Johnson is a franchise player that can help our offense tremendously for years to come. He is a can't miss pick at a position of need for us. Yes, we need to fix the OLine, but we have the running game with Cory and Ronnie, and if Ricky comes back, it will just be gravy. With Johnson and Booker on the outside and Chambers in the slot, we would arguably have the best WRs in the NFL. Having a threat in both the running and passing game would certainly make it easier to game plan around the other holes. Remember, Ricky made a poor OLine look good.
4) Locking this guy up now, means that we can evaluate the young talent we have at both DL and OL this year, hope we get some good players in the draft to develop, see if Daunte can come back, and fill in the holes next year. No one really has a very good assessment of where the team is today because Nick screwed it up so bad the past two years. I think if Daunte recovers, we are 1 CB, 1 LT or OG (I hope we pick up a good center this year), 1 #1 WR, and 1 DT away from being a contender. And out of Vickerson, Evans, and the Wright brothers, I suspect someone will step up. And we may get lucky with Alabi, Toledo, and Jason Allen. The one guy we don't have on the roster is a sure fire, deep threat WR.

If I could get TB to take that trade, I'd do it in a hearbeat and pick Calvin Johnson.

Okay boys, flame on if you must. :)

CJ sounds good, but we need our picks man. But I feel what u are saying. If there was a way to draft him and keep our first second round pick to get a Offensive Linemen, how could anybody be upset with that.

Thing is . . . when u have a player like CJ, it may take more than what a "value chart" suggest. He is a #1 top pick value . . . and Tampa probably would require our 1st this year and possibly a first next year. Don't go by value charts when thinking about CJ, they get thrown out the window IMO.

With the trade u suggested, I would pull the trigger, but its not enough

Yeah, we need our picks, but CJ is no ordinary WR. We should do anything possible to land this guy. Having many draft picks are important, but by this scenario, we would still have 7 picks. Thats still really good. Everyone is always worried about our offense and always says we need more offensive firepower, well there is no better start than drafting the BEST players in the draft by far. Drafting CJ would give us an instant star, something this offense desperatly needs. I really hope we somehow are able to make a trade up and draft CJ.

According to the draft value chart at NFL.com, the #4 pick has a value of 1800 not 2000. That's a big difference when assessing a potential trade.

We could still trade up by giving TB our #9 pick and our #40 pick which would give it a value of 1850. We could either let TB slide on the 50 point difference or ask for their 5th round pick to close the difference. We still get to keep one of our 2nd round picks and possibly add a 5th in the deal.

I'd give our 9th and 40th picks for Calvin Johnson in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, my guess is Gruden would too.

Value charts vary slightly from team to team and from year to year. Here is the one I referenced:

Also, I was trying to find a way to keep our #40 pick and give up the #60 in the 2nd. I think it would net us another "almost 1st rounder", but your way is reasonable as well.

I think it would take three picks. I think there is certainly a value to the number of picks as well as which picks they are. Gruden would probably be tempted by the 9th, 60th, and 71st overall.

I don't think C. Johnson will be on the board at #4. I think that someone will trade into the top 2 picks to acquire him.

No way would I ever spend that much in picks and cap money on a guy who might touch the ball 5 times a game. The only positions in this draft worth trading up for would be a franchise QB or LT.

If the Raiders get a QB before the draft they will take him.

He will not slip past Tampa bc Gruden is in love with him, and that is one of the most pressing needs on the team.

We would have to give up too much to move up,(either to #3 or #1) and we have more needs that need addressing. We will not be moving up to get CJ.

I really don't like the idea to trade up n get a WR, especially with so much questions around the QB position (thought I think I'm one of the more optimistic Dolphin fans about the Culpepper situaiton). But every year the top WRs in the draft get over hyped and when it comes to playing, they just don't play up to the hype. The only exception off the top of my head is Larry Fitzgerald. Keep our 9th, address something other than WR (I hope Landry), and there'll be plenty of quality WRs when our name comes up again.
