I know if we trade Derrick Rodgers (as opposed to releasing him) we most likely will get a draft pick for him (perhaps a 5th or 6th rounder in the 2004 draft). What would be the effect for our salary cap situation if we: a) trade him now; b) release him now; c) trade him after June 1 (quite unlikely, I know); or d) release him after June 1?
If we experience significant cap relief by waiting until after June1 to release/trade him, then we might be better off for this year in not trading him. By waiting to release him we could use the salary cap savings on a position of need. If we trade him now anyway, this would certanly be a move to help the team in the future (not pushing the cap hit into next year, plus receiving a draft choice for him in next year's draft).
