here are my opinions on trading down in this years draft and the reasons that it is practical for Miami.

first, this draft is deep. there are going to be a lot of very solid players on the boards in rounds 2-4, some that may be able to come in and compete for starting jobs.

second, because the draft is deep, it also means there is a lot more chance of top tier players slipping, because more reaches will be made becuase more talent will be on the board.

third, we stockpile draft choices. if we were to trade down from the number nine spot, into maybe the middle teens like 14-17, we could likely pick up another 2nd rounder. which means that we could end up with any of these two, Zach Miller, Brian Leonard, Brandon Siler, Arron Sears, etc...gives us some pretty sweet options.
this is why i hope that Quinn falls to us, and that some team behind us gets hungry and is willing to give us more picks.

another thing that is beneficial for us to trade down, is salary. picking in the top ten, you know you are going to have to pay a very high salary to whichever player you choose, and it is going to be a long term deal. now, if you pick later in the round, the years start to come off the deal and the salary decreases which means there are less financial losses if the player is a bust, and it also will give us more cap flexibility in the upcoming years.

in my eyes, trading down is the only viable option in this draft,

As always, the issue with trading down it two-fold. First, is there a trade partner. Someone who is looking real hard as a particular player who happens to fall...At our traditional 14-17 pick, there is a far better chance of finding that partner. At #9, someone above us has to "think outside the box" in order for there to be a trade market.

Second, you have to get reasonable value for the trade-down. This is where we may have an advantage at #9. We'd have to get at least a second round pick for this. Is someone going to give up a 2nd rounder, knowing like we do, that there is a lot of value in the day one rounds ??

It's not the only viable option for us. In fact, it's probably not going to be an option at all. The best option for us, would be that only if the right option presents itself on draft day we take it and/or, and more importantly, we choose a player that impacts us positively this year with that selection.

The issue we have had for years (since Wanny took over for JJ), is that we just haven't made good choices in our day one picks...

no way we trade up and draft quinn end of story this team needs a QB!

In another thread, I said...Trade down with what team? Under what circumstances? Who is left on the board at 9 that's valuable enough for someone to trade up? Trades do not happen in a vacuum, and the most important part of a trade is finding someone to trade with you.

I agree that finding a trading partner is key to all these discussions, and as such, much of this rests on speculation. I think what others are speaking about, however, assumes that Quinn falls to 9. If he does, then I think the likelihood is greater (although still slim) that there would be more trade partners.
I don't think he will fall to 9 but if it happens, I'm all in favour of trading down.

Any of these guys would garner plenty of interest:

Quinn,Petersen,Branch,Brown,Anderson, and maybe even Landry to a certain west coast team.

I think there are 12 or so potential impact players in this draft - after the top 12, it kind of becomes a crapshoot IMO. If you look at our roster, the one thing we are sorely missing is youthful impact players. I kind of like the idea of sticking put and picking whoever falls into our lap, but as always, if someone's willing to knock our socks off then I would obviously listen.

I really am not enamored with the middle of the first round in this draft. With the exception of Ginn/Meachem, I don't see any guys that look to be future standouts.

anyone know which team(s) has more than one 2nd round pick? if there is one. then that can be a possible trade down partner.

Tampa and the Jets have two 2nd round picks, niether of whom would be our trade partners.

If peterson falls, (i doubt ti, but if) Green Bay might be interested from #16, if quinn falls, St. Louis (#13), Carolina (#14), and Jacksonville (#17), are possible candidates, as i have seen them take quinn in some mock drafts ive looked at. St. Loius might also be interested in branch or okoye, which one of them is sure to fall to us.

Gah, the boards ate my post. To shorten it up, lemme first start with a thanks for listing possibilities, as the OP didn't, and that makes it a bit difficult to have a conversation ;)

As far as the players go, a lot of them won't be there when we pick, and the ones that we do probably won't scare anyone into trading up with us or risk losing them. We'll have to wait until pick #9 draft day to see how things are going to go, but until then a trade is more unlikely than it is likely.

I agree on trading down as long as our target is Ryan Kalil OC, after watching the NFLNETWORK's combine coverage Sat. I've developed a man-crush on Kalil and remembering the 80's w/D. Stephenson. At 290 lbs. I WANT MY BEEF-CAKE! :)

seriously though, if we traded down, we could end up with a pretty sweet first day.

draft Meachem in RD 1, then go after the best two of Siler, Leonard, Miller, Kalil, Sears, Stanton, or if anyone of substance else of first round notoriety falls to us, it has me salivating.

I think there are definitely some teams that might be interested in jumping up into the Top 10 . . . but probably not until draft day. If Peterson falls, I would not be surprised if we receive multiple offers.

I am all for it . . . particularly if we could somehow grab Meachem and Spencer with our first two picks. I think both of them are impact guys that are going to be great values in the late 1st, early-to-mid 2nd.

We'd have serious interest in all of the people you listed except for Peterson, why trade?

Leonard would be tremendously underutilized on our team, and Miller likely would be too. Not to mention he looked horrible at the combine. Siler is a MLB, and we need OLBs. Sears isn't too great either, I'm pretty sure Quinn outbenched him.
