OK lets get this straight.

What does trading Feeley now vs. cutting him this upcoming offseason, do to our cap?

Do we save by trading him now? Because I thought that if we just cut him next offseason, we dont owe him his salary. If that isnt the case, then it makes a lot of sense why we traded him.

This would also mean the Fins are clearing a butt load of space for next season. Making room for possibly a high priced guy (Rivers).

Im sure the subject of Rivers came up during the talks between Miami and SD, and maybe this move was a precursor to move Rivers here. SD gets to groom Feeley, a backup with some experience to fill in the hole next year. Miami just got Lemon because they needed another QB since they were getting rid of Feeley.

The only real difference is what happens to the $2 million in remaining signing bonus. With the trade, that accelerates into this year's cap. If the trade didn't happen and he was cut next year, it would go into next year's cap. I think that if he were cut this year, it would go into next year's cap.

Please explain exactly what you have seen from Rivers that gives you such emotions to get him ??. Brees would be the better option right ??

I dont want either of them.. either way, they will both cost a ton of money/picks whether it be signing Brees or trading for Rivers

Acquiring a guy they see as a potential starter only helps us build the team stronger at other posistions which in turn can make the QB search a lot easier..

We already have two stud backs, we have good recievers and a top TE.. now imagine if we can build a GREAT OLine.. It would mean that we wouldnt need to have an Elite QB to win

The less we have around the QB the more it requires us to put into the posistion..

We cut him now so we can bring in another person. So we can GET something for him. I DONT KNOW ABOUT LEMON. BUT I read that some people in the SD organization are pisssed about losing lemon

It actually does just about NOTHING. The reason is, if we didn't use up this $3 million in cap room this year, we were probably going to negotiate about $1.5 million of it into phony incentives of a veteran's contract. After a certain date (it escapes me what day it is), ANY incentives negotiated into a player's contract are counted as "likely to be earned" which means they count immediately into the 2005 salary cap. When/if the guy does not earn the incentive, however, that amount is credited back to you in the form of a credit on the 2006 salary cap.

Had we just cut Feeley, yeah we would be on the line for about a $1.5 million signing bonus acceleration in 2006. But, we'd also have done the incentive thing which gives us a $1.5 million credit in 2006.

Instead, we trade Feeley, which brings us from $3 million under the cap to probably $1.5 million under the cap, and so now we won't be negotiating any of those phony incentives, so in 2006 we're not on the line for any signing bonus acceleration for Feeley, but at the same time, we're not getting any salary cap credit either for the incentives because we're not going to go that route anymore.

In other words, in reality, the coaches were ambivalent about whether they cut Feeley or trade him, unless they could actually get some kind of compensation for him in trade, which they doubted. Even San Diego says Feeley was an afterthought, AJ Smith said concentrate on the draft pick, cuz thats why they did it.
