which player would you consider trading our first pick for, because all the positions we need is very deep in the draft this year lb's, cb, fs, ol, if we could trade this pick for a playmaker, and get another pick back might as well do it

Noone... How are we going to build a young competitve team by trading our draft picks... See Colts, Ratriots, Steelers, Chargers - all draft built teams

if it gets us that one player to put us over the hump isn't worth it. imagine if we get a marquee player with a second rounder back in the deal, because i am pretty sure we would have to give up a 1 and 3. we will have 3 second rounders that is usually where all the gems are found.

This is the one one thing that really annoys me about this forum. Why can some people not understand that "young" does not mean better. Talent and coaching is what makes a team great. Finding a young and capable player is not easy to do. Why are some of you so against having veterans on the team? If that player performs at a high level then why does it really matter? If you look at the past superbowl winners you will see that each of them had key veterans on their team. If we could add a quality player like Anquon Boldin why not? We have the cap space to make such a move and getting a player of his ability would make us so much better. It just baffles me why some of you think the only way to improve the team is through the draft. That is not the case at all. The patriots didnt draft everybody on the roster. They made 2 key trades that brought them Randy Moss and Wes Welker. That worked out pretty well for them didnt it?

Right now it depends on talent/value ratio. I would not be surprised to see a trade down if the right guy isnt' there when we draft.

Patriots built the majority of their team through the draft though. In 2001, it was basically a ragtag group that won it for them, but they replaced those guys with younger, better players in the drafts that followed.

Of course, you can't always have a team completely full of young guys, you need a few older players in there for experience.

Over what hump? Lets not forget we weren't expected to win the division, or make the playoffs, so we are already ahead of expectations (although I understand those expectations will be increased this year). How did we do that, signed a couple FA's with value, did not give up high picks, and built the 2008 team through the draft. IMO it would be foolish to stray from that plan just because a few high priced FA's are available via trade. The majority of this team needs to be built through the draft, so we are competitve for (hopefully) at least a decade. If it is cost feasible and we get value (ie the 4th for Fasano and Ayodele), by all means, im down for that, but we shouldnt stray from our plan to build this team for the future.. I dont not want to relive the wanny days from 2009-2112 like we did from 1999 - 2004 and throwing draft picks to the wind

Wilfork, Pace, Asomugha, Gates, Hutchinson, Dansby

and probably 2 1st rounders for Mr Reed

But I will settle for taking H. Johnson G LSU(monster) early with our 1st Rd pick, I have a really strong feeling that he will get taken a lot earlier than expected. Maybe even before Duke

the good thing is the foundation is already built with last years draft we hit almost every draft pick and picked up fasano and akin like you said, so a couple of more young players and one big key acquisition and we are in the super bowl, and lets not forget we brought in bess as undrafted rookie free agent which i am sure we will be bringing in more of those, and they will preform.

I agree drafting is the best foundation for building a team that last. The cap is the reason...

However, just b/c a team trades away a pick or two, here and there. Does not mean the team cannot continue to build with the draft.

Trading away a 1st round pick is not the end of the world. There is a higher level of risk, that the player in the 1st round will not live up to his contract, than trading for a guy that is worth a 1st round pick.

The teams you listed have had some really good drafts as a whole.

The Pats have drafted well, traded away players for picks very well, signed solid free agents, traded for a Top 5 WR, traded for a Top 20 WR. They have built the closest thing to a dynasty in years by doing all very well.

Miami can trade the 25th pick and still be aggressive with the draft. But they are not gonna do that for just any player.

If Miami trades away the 25th pick...
* They do not think they will have THEIR GUYS on the board at @25 & the pick may end up being a reach.

* Some team is making a mistake for trading with Miami. BP and company will not trade away a 1st round pick for anyone less than PROVEN TALENT. That is better than a mid range risk player late in the 1st round. The chances of Miami trading the pick away...slim to none. Teams must be hard pressed to trade away Pro Bowl talent for a 1st round pick.

...

Miami has rumors on Austin Miles right now...
* It helps Miami to be mentioned in a trade like this for him. They have already shown they are willing to sign just about any Cowboy. Most claim he will get a 2nd round tender. He cannot be given a tender lower than the 2nd round, IF the Cowboys want a pick in return. He was an undrafted player and requires no pick. I hope that Miami would NEVER trade a 2nd round pick for Miles. But it does show that Miami has other WR options.

That could help IF.. Miami wanted to trade for Ohco Stinko, A. Boldin or any other WR of PROVEN talent. Right up till the team calls the bluff on the Miles option and asked for a 1st and ?? picks in the draft. Then BP ask them to "Write this down..." then hangs up the phone. If it was Rick Speilman on the other line...I wonder how long he would wait? Do you think he would last until the buzzer starts going off? I do...

I would rather have a rookie playmaking machine on the up and up with a mid range cap number...then a proven OLDER Vet and a high contract. But the draft does not work like that, we could miss and still be in need. Not to mention paying the tab for him. I think most of the LB's and LT/RT players will be long gone by #25.

If Miami can get a Proven Talented Pro Bowl Type Player (w/ at least 4-5 years left of a high level of play.) for a 1st round pick and the contract demands. Then pull the trigger...but not a pick more for the player.

thats the formula we need to follow.. All those moves (and picks) were VALUE moves.. Fasano, Ayodele, Smiley, Bess, Thomas, Langford... We made no huge, "sexy" trades, but made solid, value added moves and did not trade away draft picks, AND, did not pay those players high salaries that come with trading high draft picks... (for example Namdi would cost 2 1sts and 10 mil(roughly)/year=not value)... I believe we will continue to build this team the way we did in 2008.. through that we will get better..
We wont be trading away our 1st rounder while restructuring that trade player and paying him 10/year.

Right now it depends on talent/value ratio. I would not be surprised to see a trade down if the right guy isnt' there when we draft.

If Miami's draft board is getting thin on value at #25...There is a solid chance they trade down with a team.

IF that happens...
* P. Harvin: It would be nice to see him show off at the combine and pro days. Maybe Tenn would get jumpy and try to trade up. We could get another pick and move back. Then the player would not be as much of a risk.

* C. Wells: It would really help a trade down if he FALLS and the cards have him high on their boards. Indy has a new coach and might want a running game. That would also add in the Cards for a trade down partner.

It would be okay if Miami moved back into the 2nd round and also got a 1st round pick next year from a team in the middle of the round.

The positions Miami needs the most should have several prospects in the 2nd round that would be MUCH better value.

The following players should be gone by the 25th pick. (Not in order...)
Vontae Davis
Alphonso Smith
Brian Cushing
BJ Raji
Jason Smith
James Laurinaitis
Rey Maualuga

...If they are...I hope Miami trades down or trades the pick for a proven talent that has at least 4-5 years left of a high level of play.

the 25th pick is def worth trading for a Boldin or a player of his caliber what rookie will produce at his level?

Sean Smith is probably going to run 4.4 and raise his stock to 1st round.

The Dolphins probably draft him with the 25 and make him their FS.
