The ghost of Jim Plunkett revived!
Growing up in the 70's and 80's in the DC area and a Dolphin fan, I had a friend - Redskins fan - who LOVED rallying behind old, seeming has been QBs. And he LOVED Jim Plunkett. Plunkett always seemed to underperform for the niners or New England or whatever damn loser team he was on.
But then the Raiders took him as an after thought in the late 70's to back up Dan Pastorini. Pastorini got injured and the rest is history. He came in and played really well. He won two Superbowls, and was a player who was a leader when needed and a role player when other stars took over.
I HAVE to dream of Cutler doing the same damn thing.
As a Bear I loved him because he was not a Dolphin. I could never figure that guy out. Super talented, and seemingly arrogant. But it was hard to say because the teams he played on for most part sucked - and that was not his fault at all. And he would suffer bad sacks. Take hits. And he'd screw up or so it seemed with interceptions - so his body language thing gave an impression. But who really knows?
Even last season the damn kicker missed a very makable field goal after he drove them down to beat the Redskins in the closing seconds. What can you do when your team is SO bad? Bears are a mess and he was smart to retire from there.
If I was Cutler I would want to play for the Gase and the Dolphins too.
Lady luck smiled on this guy - and the $ is not the whole equation by a longs shot. OK I am not arguing 5 to 13 million dollars in a year is big $ - but Cutler will do right well in the broadcasting world too and no hits from the likes of NFL defenses - no waking up feeling like you were in a car wreck that you were lucky to survive.
So I think its the big machine Gase put together down here. Ajayi can get it done that was proven last season. Landry, Stills and Parker (with Parker blowing up all off season). So if I am Cutler I would think this is a dream come true. So many weapons.
If Gase can simply help Cutler play within himself - avoid taking hits and let the athletes on this team do there thing - Cutler can ride a wave that shuts his critics up forever.
Think Jim Plunkett because honestly back in 1980 when he took his Raiders to that Superbowl ride against the Eagles and later the Redskins - people said the same damn things about him! Injured, never was that great, his teams were losers, or whatever and he went out on top!
