Training camp updates - 7th August - Welcome to the Jay Cutler era

And apparently he has a bad hairdo, coming from the interview thread. I must be out of the loop and need a makeover because my hair and clothes are similar :laugh. Maybe we need a fashion thread in the lounge to keep us slackers up to date.

Interview thread?

Anyone familiar with watching Cutler play able to chime in on his deep ball tendencies and instincts?

Gase reeled him in quite a bit in '15. Chicago was the 2nd most run heavy team when the game was within 1 score (50% vs avg 58%) and 61% run in the second half with any lead (7th most).

Quite opposite of a true vertical offensive team and gung-ho type HC like Bruce Arians who has always hung his hat on the motto, "no risk it, no biscuit".

Here's an excerpt from Arians on a conversation with Andrew Luck:

Andrew excelled at throwing the long ball, and so I always put six long bombs in our plan for each game. I constantly told Andrew to take a shot if the defense appeared vulnerable based on it's pre-snap formation. "If it's 3&3 and you got T.Y. on a deep route, then throw the ****ing ball to T.Y.," I'd tell Andrew. " I don't care that we only need three yards. Throw the ball to T.Y."

That said, Arians goes on to say:

So much of a being an NFL QB has nothing to do with arm strength and being 6'5" and 250#; at it's core, it's about being a leader of men.

That comment was about making a decision on draft day b/w Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. (but also relates to Cutler)

So now after the rambling, I'll say that we're not going to see some wild gunslinger behind center in Gase's offense. I'm sure those types of plays will be there as it is a high-low read progression offense, but Gase, and the E&P system he runs, is more about efficiency and ball control offense then it is about big plays and fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants scoring strikes.

For you guys that don't like the new QB just remember the debate is over and he's our guy now so probably time to support the team and wish him well .
Let's see how this plays out. Hopefully he has a good season,

If not at least you'll have your "I told you so's" to comfort you through our losing campaign :)

Well that just confirms its about familiarity witht the scheme and Gase. He needs to get throwing to his guys and try to get some chemistry.

TE may get a few more balls then originally planned, this OL still really worries me though. I see them making it hard on him or Moore as far as screens and that type of play to limit the QB mistakes - we don't have the best history of executing those plays with much sucess.

It looks like they filmed that inside a sauna. Is there any place else with wood walls?

That's just Cutler sneaking out from training camp to have a quick smoke in a wooden port-a-potty.

*For real though, that smokehouse is badass.

Sounds overconfident. That is not a good mindset to have in his situation. The more you think you know, the more you don't know. I'm rooting for success but expecting some hard knocks.

What do you expect him to say? "Well it sucks I don't get to **** my wife twice a day anymore, and I really need to cut back on the cigarettes, but I'd be happy if we won three games."

To touch up more on what I was saying earlier.

What Adam did with Jay was kind of take the ball out of his hands a little bit,” Chicago radio personality and former Bears receiver Tom Waddle, who previously co-hosted Cutler’s radio show, said on ESPN Radio.

They didn’t ask Jay to do too much. It was more about mistake elimination.

. . .

Gase, Waddle said, “leveled out his performance,” joking “you had to get an air sickness bag” with Cutler before Gase arrived because there were so many highs and lows.

I think you are correct Jim

Regardless that is a fine looking smoke house :thumbsup

And if Congemi caught up to him while having a smoke by the wooden port o potty that's fine too :)
