I am so excited for the future of this team.

These two you can see significant improvements each game. At this point in the season I would not be disappointed if Daniels and Crowder were both picked in the first round. That is the kind of quality we are getting out of them.

Daniels has been the most impressive. This guy was said to be slow and not have the quickness and hip movement to excel at the next level. I have seen him keep up with some of the quickest receivers in the NFL. Everytime I see this I get happy thinking that Daniels biggest flaw doesn't seem to be an issue. Every year rookie CBs are just picked on all game. Same is true with Daniels, yet I woudl never say I have been disappointed by him. Unlike some other CB I won't talk about. Even DeAngelo Hall was poor last year. At this point in the season is there anyone that would say the play of Pac-Man Jones or Antrell Rolle (before injury) has been more impressive than Daniels. We are lucky to have him not just for his coverage ability but also the physical pressence he brings to the position.

Channing Crowder looks great. That is all there is to say about him. Once again another great steal. He has looked as good as any of the other linebackers imo. Merriman has 7 sacks but he is only used as a pass rushing specialist basically. Johnson has been nice. Thurman looks worse and worse each week as teams are running at him more and reading him in coverage (he has still been impressive though). Lofa, he has also been great. I am not saying that Crowder is the best or will be the best but he was a third round pick and is going to be our MLB for years to come. He is playing out of position and has adjusted quite well both to regular packages and nickle packages.

I am just so pleased with our rookies. Manuel Wright has even looked strong of late. Yes Roth may be disappointing but it sometimes takes pass rushers a year or two to really be effective.

Daniels reminds me of Sam Madison

and

Crowder reminds me of a ray lewis type player

Both will be the defensive faces of this franchise in the near future

And just think that was all one draft!! In April, we will hopefully have another great Saban lead draft. I think most of us are just so shocked because we've forgotten what it's like to actually get productive players from the draft. Remember the Jimmy drafts (excluding his 1st round picks) and how much fun it was seeing 2-4 great players coming out every year. So far I think Saban's 1st draft stands toe to toe with any draft we've ever had.

Here's to more great Saban drafts!

I'm happy with all of them but I have to say that Crowder has been the most impresive...more than Daniels without taking anything away from him cos I like what he's done too.Having said all that, I think Manny's gonna be the best of them all.I'll say it again...he reminded me of a young "mean" Joe Green wearing old 75.The guy's gonna be a beast....our biggest steal imo since we took Zack in the 5th round.

Don't forget Wright and Roth. Altogether this rookie class holds FOUR future starters, and I'm very comfortable dubbing all four of them a future starter.

Some will be solid, some will be spectacular. But this is what I love about Saban. First year and he's already starting to gather some of the faces of this defense of the future...the core players that should be around for years. Remember that Jimmy really wasted no time doing that either, and for all the Jimmy haters, you have to admit he put together some core performers on D that withstood the test of time. Right in his first draft in 1996 he got Daryl Gardener, Zach Thomas, and Shawn Wooden. Then in 1997 he added Sam Madison, Jason Taylor, and Derrick Rodgers. Good ole Jimmy, he never let up and in 1998 he added Patrick Surtain, Kenny Mixon, and Lorenzo Bromell.

Altogether I would say those were 9 guys that very much characterized the Johnson era defense.

And Wannstedt? The biggest defensive contributor he ever drafted was Morlon Greenwood. If THAT is the only player you have to hang your hat on, man, what a poor period of time it was for the franchise.

If we draft every year like this year we will be picking #32 in the draft very often :)

hey man I liked Morlon he is playing great in houston :( dont bash the guy he was a decent player for us and I wish he was our #3 backer to go w Crowder and ZT now....

Daniels doesn't remind me of Madison one bit. The thing I like about Daniels is hat he isn't afraid to mae contact and hit someone. A lot of guys, including Madison, shy away from tackling and either try to push them out of bounds, slow them up enough for someone else to finish it off or tackle with their fingers. It really irritates me.

Crowder is just a beast. You can look up what I said back in training camp. I said, that he owuld be starting by the end of the year whtehr Seau was hurt or not and that he would get strong consideration for DROY. Although I doubt he even gets a sniff at the award, I think he has earned his way into the lineup and looks damn good doing it.

If Vickerson comes back next year and progresses alongside Manny Wright and Will Poole can come back and be effective like he was his rookie year, I think we may have the right mix of talented youths on this defense to go a long way with.

Why is everyone so down on Roth? Do you not realize what an impact Kenny Mixon had on our team for YEARS until he signed a pretty sizable contract with the Vikings?

I mean, at WORST, that is exactly what Roth is...a very specialized run stuffing LDE, just like Mixon.

If pass rushing is the only thing a LDE is supposed to do, why the heck did Kenny Mixon keep Trace Armstrong on the bench for 2 out of 3 downs for so many years?

Manny is actually a 6th round pick if you think about it. Usually a pick one year forward is worth one round. So for instance to get a 6th round last year you would need to give up next year's 5th. So you could look at him as a 2006 5th rounder or a 2005 6th rounder.

Don't forget Vickerson and Shirdonya Mitchell. The talk in camp was that Vickerson was very impressive and looks like with some experience will become a solid player. Shirdonya Mitchell has all the physical skills but not the experience. Neither may work out, but they could also both work out. That would give Saban 5-6 defensive starters and a franchise RB on offense from his 1st draft.

Just astonishing.

Daniels reminds me of SURTAIN, not Madison. And I mean Patrick when he was young and still considered a bit of a safety/corner tweener. Remember, Pat could always tackle real well, and he was a very quick learner. He didn't develop true ball skills until the game slowed down for him quite a bit...so it's possible Daniels could still develop those ball skills.

As for Crowder, we're all in love with his physicals but I just have to say he's got a long way to go on the mental side of things before he really starts becoming a viable replacement for Zach. Until then keep Zach around at all costs, IMO. Still, Channing is an invaluable tool to have around at your disposal because of his size/athleticism. He cuts like a knife when he hits. Until we get a guy with true instincts, Teddy Bruschi to Crowder's Ted Johnson, then we can ill afford to let Zach leave or retire.

Crowder was a 1st round talent coming out of college. His production should merit that OF a first rd pick imo. It was just his character that kept him dropping(and injury). Great pick up for us!!!
