What is so wrong with having Travis Minor as a back up RB?

He did pretty good when we had Ricky as our premier back. Well the first year any ways. But you also got to remember that our line was better in Ricky's first year. I think Minor will be fine as long as we have a decent line and I think we got that.

He does well as a change of pace back, but becomes a liability if he sees significant playing time. He's good for maybe 4 or 5 carries a game, tops. I dont think he would be still be on this team if he wasn't a good special teams player.

When his number was called in 2004, he sucked.

When Sammy Morris had his number called, he was quite a bit better.

Morris has been proven to be better then Minor.

He plays well out of the back feild as a reciever. I think he will be just fine as a BU RB. And he's cheap.

I agree. Sammy Morris is better.

However, let's not forget what happened to Travis Minor two years ago. His father, who he was extraordinarily close to, died tragically in a motorcycle accident in Baton Rouge.

Don't discount the effect that can have on a player.

I've noticed his production has dropped off after that incident.

morris is good.i really dont think minor is good but we need him for st

Morris proved to the coaching staff to be the better running back..I like Sammy a little better..but Travis is also good

Minor isnt our back up now and really wasnt when Ricky was retired. Sammy Morris is alot better then Minor as a RB and is going to be #2 at RB. He was the only quality RB we had after Ricky had bounced and Gordon got hurt.

I think Travis is quite a capable back-up along with Morris..

As long as neither of the two are called for to cary the load alone all season, I think we will be fine

Minor will be a great 3rd or 4th back for us but im still not sure he makes the team.

I think Morris could carry the load if needed. It looks like Saban thinks so aswell.

Yah so Sammy rolls up a 4.0 average (career high) that year and Minor did a 3.6. However Minor rolled up a 4.8, 4.1 and 4.7 average his first 3 years including nearly 10 yards a catch his rookie year and somehow gets forgotten. Meanwhile Sammy hasn't averaged above 3.7 in any year other then that one. 2004 was an anomally really along with the rest of that season.

The real problem is that the OL still isn't that good and is geared for power runners as they are going to get hit behind the line or within the first couple of yards where as Minor's more of a quick scat back. Minor is really the better option as a 3rd down back as he's quicker and catches better. I honestly don't think Sammy could reproduce his average in 2004 if Ronnie were to ever go down.

I'm hoping one of the less heralded guys steps up cause while Minor will be fine as a 3rd down back type neither him or Sammy will be adequate replacements 'if' something happened to Ronnie. I still expect a 'move' to be attempted to bring in a more adequate backup or someone they can do a committee with if Ronnie were to go down as I don't think they would use Minor as a starter in that situation and he'd retain his 3rd down back role.

We are talking apples and oranges here. Could/will Travis Minor be a good back-up running back. Answer: yes IF by back-up you mean a change of pace, third down recieving back. But IF you mean a guy who can start if Ronnie Brown is injured then I believe the answer is a resounding no!

Minor is too light and not enough of a power back to carry the rock 20-30 times a games week in and week out. To use him that way wuld be a waste of his talent. He is best, imo, coming out of the backfield or taking in deep in the shotgun and running a draw.

His best position, that of third down back in the line of Jim Kiick, Tony Nathan, etc., is no longer a position we utilize on this team much. Brown is a three down back with his pass catching ability.

Yet, I think he will likely make the club for his versatility, leadership and special teams play. For a running back he is a very good open field tackler. I think the only chance he leaves is if someone like Kay-Jay Harris proves himself able to take over the special teams work and proves to be as versatile with the added bonus of being able to regularly run between the tackles.
