I was watching America's Game tonight. The replay of #1 in the countdown, the '72 Miami Dolphins, (the "Perfect Season"). This is my third time watching it. This made me think about the season that Earl Morrall had with the Miami Dolphins in '72.
In that year, he stepped in for an injured Bob Griese and directed the Miami Dolphins to 12 consecutive victories and the only undefeated season in NFL history. For the "Perfect Season", Earl won a raft of awards including the AFC Player of the Year, the AFC Top Passer, Comeback Player of the Year and his team's MVP award.
I was wondering if the same could happen to Trent Green. We all talk about his age, and how he is too old to play the game. But what if he comes, and can lead the team back to the playoffs. I am not talking about another Perfect Season, although that would be perfect. But maybe, he can lead our team, until we find our franchise QB, or until the QB we draft this year is ready to start. Just as Earl stepped down when Griese was ready to come back.
Shula brought Morrall due to their relationship, and they experiences they had in Baltimore. Cameron might bring Green to Miami, due to the same connection. Who knows?? It could be. I just wonder.
I wanted to add: Morrall's Passer rating in 1972 was 91.0, while the league's average was 66.3

He played 14 games, completed 83 of 150 attempts, for a completion percentage of 55.3. He had 1360 yds. The average yards per pass was 9.1. He threw 11 touchdowns, against 7 interceptions. He had 17 rushing attempts for 67 yds and 1 touchdown. Not great numbers, but then again, we had Csonka, Kiick and Morris in the running game.

By the way, he was a Michigan State guy, like Drew Stanton.

They didn't really need to rely on Morrall for his passing though....Miami pounded the ball all day long by handing it off to Csonka, Kiick, and Mercury Morris...then when Miami went on defense they just completely shut other teams down. But, I do think we could use a veteran QB like Green for insurance.

IMO:You have an excellent point Green could provide the same things for the Dolphins as Morrall. But at what cost!

Morrall was claimed on waivers for $100.

BTW, 39 yards of Morall's rushing yards came on one play. Someone later said he ran the fourty in twodays flat

His performance was so integral to the Dolphins success it isn't funny. Anyone saying we just pounded it to our RB's is ignorant. He performed like a true champion in every sense of the word. The decision to put in Greise in the playoffs was beyond gutsy and totally visionary by Shula because Morrall had earned the confidence of everybody.

Wow - what an extremely interesting point. I don't know if we can hope for the same sort of success (we may be a year or two away from a SuperBowl) but this definately puts the acquisition of Green in a new light for me.

Side note: Can you buy the perfect season episode on DVD?

You can't really compare the two eras. That season, the Fins averaged somewhere around 205 yds of rushing a game. While Morrall's QB rating was good, we didn't rely on the pass like in today's game. That doesn't take anything away from what he and the team accomplished, but it has nothing to do with what Green could do for us this season, if we get him and if he's called upon to start....

I am watching it now. For the third time as well:D

Trent Green makes sense to me as long as we draft a QB for the future as well.

Quinn/Stanton/Edwards/Beck/ect.

No doubt we are after Quinn. Trent Green is not old like Morral in a physical sense other than his concussion. One more of those and his doc will be telling him to retire ala Aikman and others. Brain movement is not good for your long term life.
