Tripp getting serious look, Damien Williams impressing

I guess I missed where Daniel Thomas is making millions. He is on the last year of a rookie contract that was far from expensive.

u still save double. You save 800K by cutting Thomas and 400K by cutting Gillislee

it would be nice if they gave these 2 backs williams and darkwa a few carries at least with a better oline so we can get a better feel for them...awfully hard to do when the guys getting engulfed as soon as he gets the rock

I can see your point, however they were not exactly playing against world beaters either. :idk:

A 400k difference means nothing to an NFL team going into a season. They will keep the player they feel is more worth a roster spot if 400k is the difference between them, in which case I think the team would rather keep the more experienced Thomas.

HUH?

what makes you think he wasnt physical in college? thats what the finz liked about him was his physical nature.

and whats with the "if he improves his vision" on damien williams? havnt heard of one coach saying ANYTHING like that.

link?

I like Damien Williams, but part of the reason he went completely undrafted was because of his lack of vision and lack of power.

Damien Williams

Very average vision and feel to anticipate creases. Runs with blinders and misses holes. Not explosive to and through the hole. Lacks strength, power and drive to run inside and grind out tough yardage. Overwhelmed in pass protection -- needs to learn how to sit to anchor and use his hands. Still has some JUCO habits and could learn to compete more consistently.

Let's give Williams a shot. We gave Thomas a couple shots and how has that worked? Gillislee would be on the bubble in my book.

Tripp needs to add at least 10 pounds and get stronger

He will. You can see the difference in just about every player that enters the league after a year or two...they get much bigger. The ones that end up being really good though, are the ones that keep their speed. Unfortunately, many don't keep that balance...

They also have to beat the drug tests.

Misi is a good example. He weighed in at the Senior Bowl around 240. He was extremely active and covered a lot more ground than he does at 255.

Maybe, but our first team OL doesn't do a good job of opening running lanes so all we might find out is how well he takes a no gainer and pushes through to make it a 1 yard gain.

At least on he 2's or 3's he gets running lanes. The tacklers are so hit and miss that he gets a chance to show his shiftiness, run through contact and open field ability. Frankly, if I were Williams I'd want to be showcased on any unit that has Smith and Turner ... those are our best run blocker's at the moment. Currently, that's the 2's, so it's probably his best chance to shine.

That group is going to give him chances to show some blitz pick up as well.

LOL, good point. The testing seems to be nabbing more people than usual this year.

For what it's worth, Damien Williams led all RB in the 2014 draft class in Speed Score (Football Outsiders metric based on size/speed).

Not sure I'd agree with the lack of power and strength. That kid can deliver quite a pop.

The big problem w him is just vision and decision making. Physically, he's as impressive as any RB that was in this past draft. He's built the way you want a RB built.

Williams looked good, but you have to wonder why he was getting carted off the field for a funny bone knee injury.

I thought Tripp looked just ok. He can move, but its hard to tell off of limited play in 1 game. I'll be watching him closer tomorrow.

Sure, but like Lamar Miller, he doesn't break too many tackles.

Size doesn't always translate into power. For example, Lamar Miller (224 lbs), Damien Williams (222 lbs), Daniel Thomas (235 lbs) are all big guys. But none of them run with nearly as much power as 215 lb Marshawn Lynch, who is actually smaller.

That said, I hope Damien Williams makes the team.
