Sporting News 7/14 Tidbits

The latest Sporting News has these items of interest to dolphins fans:

About the AJ trade:

From all the positive vibes about Chargers QB Phillip Rivers' performance in the spring, there is concern about what will happen if he gets hurt. A.J. Feeley was not sharp in the offseason and looked lost at times. If Rivers goes down and Feeley flops, general manager A.J. Smith will be criticized for allowing Drew Brees to leave.

And maybe for letting Cleo Lemon go, too??

Tight end analysis:

B. Randy McMichael is coming off his best all-around season. He is an emotional catalyst.

The "B" put us tied for 9th with 10 other teams.

About Derek Hagan

The knock on rookie WR Derek Hagan was suspect hands, but he has caught the ball cleanly for the DOLPHINS. The question now is how Hagan will handle getting bumped and pressed by cornerbacks in training camp.

Sounds very encouraging.

Nice, thanks for the info.:dolphins::dolphins::dolphins:

Thanks for the tidbits.

Funny enough I thought Randy really had his best year in 2004. He was relied on a lot, more than he should be, because our QBs were just unable to hit receivers. I mean if you just think about QB accuracy and eyesight in general, the further away you are, the less accurate you are and the less likely you are to see something...so you'll often find the phrase "a good TE is a young quarterback's best friend"...well I think the reason is because young QBs dont see much or have much accuracy yet, and quite frankly passes to the tight end usually travel less distance because they are in the middle of the field.

I can't wait til training camp and pre-season.

Nice Post.

My biggest prayer is no injuries..I would love for this team to stay healthy thoughout the year.

I think McMichael had his worst year as a reciever last year. He had 100 more yards then his rookie season, but he also had less then half the big gains then he did then, and a whole lot more drops.

Part of his problem is that he was asked to do more dirty work. He was asked to block alot more, and play more of a safety valve role, running shorter routes, releases, etc. Jim Bates did the same thing when he took over, because it's in the best interest of the offense to keep him in as a blocker, even though it isnt the best use of him as a player. The blocking isnt good enough that we can let him run the deeper(for a TE) routes that he excels at.

Hopefully the blocking and the addition of blocker oriented specialists like Fred Beasley, Justin Peelle, and to a lesser extent Ronnie Brown will help free up McMichael to run the more aggressive routes he excels at.

I think that's fair. I dont agree with it but it's fair. I think it was definitely not his worst year just because as a TE you do have two roles and 2005 was by far McMichael's finest year as a blocker. He made more strides in blocking than I've ever seen before...and on top of it he had a pretty productive pass catching year so I can kind of see where the TSN folks are getting off saying that 2005 was his best year.

Very true. But I guess I don't understand why Jermane Wiggins played such a big role in the Linehan offensive system for the Vikings in 2004, but McMichael seemed to take a step back with the system in 2005. Did Frerotte just not follow the progressions down far enough?

AJ is a horrible practice player plus he is a slow learner.I remember there were some on this MB claiming that practice didnt mean anything .

That theory was put to rest when he sucked during game day too.

I am only allowed to display 5 banners because they are heavy on the graphics so I am rotating them. Here is the UCF banner.Suggest you copy it if you want it.

No, I absolutely agree that he was his best as a blocker last season. I dont think he was that great of a blocker, though. He was absolutely terrible in the past at everything except blocking down the field, and this year he was solid at everything and pretty good in pass protection IMO. I know KC Joyner had him as the 4th best TE at the POA last season, but his ratings have got me pretty skeptical.

But he's a recieving TE first and primary, and that is his biggest contribution to the team. Ideally, the team would be free to use him as aggressively as they did under Dave Wannst...

What? Did I just say that?
