Oh man, he was unreal in his hey day. One of the very few boxers in the past 20 years that could captivate the world, and put boxing on top.
I remember my dad calling me into the living room to watch Tyson fight. This was only his second or third fight (he was still wearing white shoes, not the low cut black that he's famous for). My dad loved boxing, and could watch boxing and western all day.
He tells me, "Watch this fight. This kid's going to be the next champion." I was pretty young, probably 8 or 9, but I knew he was scary. After that, only Dolphins games were as celebrated than a Tyson fight in our house. There's just nothing like the build up of a great heavyweight fight (even if you know it's going to be lop-sided). Giant killer. Didn't matter how big, Tyson made everyone look like a child.
Out of all the amazing sports upsets that have happened in my life, nothing was as big as Tyson losing to Buster Douglas (which I will still tell you Tyson won until my final breath).
