If the Americans play as well as they did at times Tuesday night, they might not even miss the guy sitting behind the basket.

The U.S. team made an impressive debut, winning all four quarters of a scrimmage against Puerto Rico before a Thomas & Mack Center crowd that included injured teammate Kobe Bryant.

Bryant, unable to play in the upcoming world championships after undergoing knee surgery last month, made his first appearance at training camp and sat with USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo about five rows behind the basket.

And watching Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put on a show reminded Bryant -- who also had to pull out of before the 2004 Olympics while dealing with a sexual assault trial -- how much he wanted to be a part of the team.

"It's tough, it's really tough," Bryant said after the game. "Especially coming, seeing guys playing, competing and doing what they did today.

"I've been looking forward to this. Since I spoke with Mr. Colangelo on the phone I've been looking forward to it, coming out here and playing and competing. It's very upsetting."

Even without the NBA's leading scorer, the Americans had several impressive spurts during the four-quarter scrimmage. Scores were reset at the start of each period, otherwise the Americans would have won 116-82.

Nah I don't think thats gonna happen this time, I saw it comming last time, but with Wade and Lebron, in a starring role now, they will win, however I agree in the fact that they selected this team and they still missing what they missed in 2004 . . a consistent outside shooter. I mean they couldn't win with Ivo being there best outside shooter, they were set up to lose. Why is Ray Allen not on this team, or even Billups, somebody dependable, I mean Gilbert and Kirk gonna hit some from behind there but would have been nice to carry a specialist on this squad.

Nah last time it was easy to see coming, Larry Brown was playing terrible combinations of players, and treating the team like they were the Pistons.....they arent the Pistons, they CAN get into a shoot out and win 120-100, no-one in the world will outscore us if we play OUR game

Going to see the team on August 13th, can't wait. This team with Coach K coaching just looks awesome. Playing Lithuiania I believe.

The team was just thrown together for the last olympics. I'm not gonna blame Larry Brown for a team being put together at the last minute. Mike D'Antoni probably should've been the coach of this team not Kryzewski that is my only gripe.

This is fun as hell to watch, its like we're making fun of them!

This looks like the damn All-Star game...

I dont blame Brown for the team, but I blame him for the type of philosophy he had in games

Wade and Lebron were high energy guys who played GREAT and he barely gave them any minutes

Wade hit a nice three in this game and was hitting them at the end of the season/playoffs (more so than usual)... Is his 3 coming along now? What you all think?

I saw part of the first half....it was close versus Puerto Rico....looks like the USA team pulled away in the 2nd half. I don't think Coach K will let them play like Larry Brown did at the Olympics. I can still remember watching the 1972 Olympics where the Russians cheated the USA out of a gold medal. :rolleyes2

Seeing as I wasnt born, would you mind giving me a quick history lesson  what happend

The game had ended and some guy came out of the stands, a Russian official I believe and had them put some time back on the clock. The Russians threw the ball in while the AMericans were celebrating/standing around in shock and a Russian guy made a basket. The Russians won. The American team never accepted the Silver as far as I know. Ranked right up there with Roy Jones getting totally robbed in Korea as most setup/total fraud/blatant fixing Ive ever seen.

Yeah,,,,,they actually got TWO chances at the end. Doug Collins, who played for the team, and later the Sixers is now a broadcaster....he never accepted his silver medal. That was the worst couple calls in the history of sports in my opinion.
