UDFA OT Michael Philipp signs with Dolphins

Was 6'4" 316 at his pro day, ran a 5.34 in the 40 and only did 19 reps of 225. Vertical jump of 26 inches. m

Started 48 games protecting one of the best passers on the left side. He was projected to make the Cleveland squad but no one knows why he didn't. Philipp earned a name for himself at tackle while at Oregon State, but a move to guard could be in order if he’s able to latch on with an NFL team. The Browns are in need of retooling the offensive line, and Philipp could be an option for a team that dealt four of its 10 draft picks, disallowing themselves to add multiple offensive linemen.

The fact that he's fairly weak makes me think the Fins see something in him -- add strength and he might be an acorn.

He must move well and have decent feet. Good frame. Add muscle and explosion in arms.

really dislike when people use combine numbers to talk about a player

I saw a whole lot of OSU football and Phipps never struck me as a pro prospect. He's not bad, performed well for a good pro style offense. Sometimes good players come out of nowhere just by doing good work. Maybe he's that sort of dude.

They are not looking at him at OT, even though he did practice there this past weekend. They are looking at him at OG. Is he athletic enough to play a guard in a zone scheme. This team apparently likes to sign tackles to play guard.

I guess. The Beavers had a solid offense when people were healthy. I tend to think that's as much Riley being a really good offensive mind as anything else. But I get peppered with Beaver talk and it was all about Cooks, Mannion, Storm Woods, and Crichton.

Said to be a mediocre athlete and his paltry numbers bear that out (slow 40 time, 26 inch vertical and a short broad jump).

He probably got by on the intangibles, technique and toughness. Put him in the weight room and in 6 months they guy could be a player.
Strength can be fixed, great speed is not a necessity when playing OG. Quickness (first step) off the snap is more important.
Low risk gamble, I like it. We need to look at as many guys as possible.
