Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has stated several times that he is working both on a deal to televise the UFC on premium cable channel HBO and to get ESPN to provide coverage of the promotion.

It seemed that the UFC was on the verge of an HBO deal when Larry Merchant, who is an integral part of the channel’s boxing coverage, told Pedro Fernandez of RingTalk.com in late 2006, “People look at it [UFC] as real wrestling. And next year HBO and Showtime, they both will test the waters and see if this works. I don't know what Showtime is doing, but we'll do four and see how it goes."

Showtime has already aired one MMA event, EliteXC this past February, and in an announcement earlier this week is expanding their reach by expanding their MMA affiliations to include K-1, BodogFight, Strikeforce, Cage Rage, and Spirit MC.

On Thursday of this week, Variety.com (a leading reporter of news in the entertainment industry) published an article about HBO’s interests in getting into the mixed martial arts game.

Variety also verified that ESPN, the unchallenged leader of sports coverage in the United States, confirmed “that it has held exploratory talks with the UFC to [secure] some rights.â€Â

Why would SPIKE TV let UFC go to ESPN?

SPIKE TV isn't very smart here

Boxing promoters are getting ready to close up shop with this news. A lot of the budget's relegated to boxing will start going MMA's way if they do better ratings on these stations. As more of a boxing fan this is a big blow for the sport but I also like MMA so it's not a total loss for me!

FIGHT NIGHT on SPIKE TV this Thursday followed by the ULTIMATE FIGHTER debut

Yeah I totally agree and it was not smart for them to let WWE go either.

THey wouldn't be letting them go totally. But why share UFC with anyone at this point when the product is hot

Yea this is a massively growing sport. Its like buying Microsoft stock in the 80's and selling before it peaks.Kinda dumb.

I don't like the way HBO is handling this, they want to use their own everything, from camera men, rings, lighting and announcers...I don't want HBO to get the rights to air it, and take away from the product because they have crappy boxing announcers that don't know **** about MMA....

They really need to just let the UFC do thing the way they want to, it would mean big money for both sides....

What options does Spike have if they don't have exclusive rights? The day that ESPN starts to cover MMA, is the day that the sport starts to become legitimate to the mainstream public...

SPIKE has no options because they cut a bad deal from the begining and when they saw they had something hot they should have ripped up that deal and do another one. Now their screwed!

Yea iff this goes to espn and hbo this sport will completely blow up.

i hope this moves to HBO for championships

Oh no, the big money matches are still gonna be on PPV. THat's UFC's bread and butter

The HBO shows will be much like the SPIKE TV FIGHT NIGHTS
