"We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

I guess he was supposed to take it easy on them?

Well, then why even field a team? Let them play each other in the gym or something. If you are going to schedule teams out of your league, then prepare to have it handed it to you. They bear some of the responsibility for the debacle.

In this era of everybody is a winner and everybody gets a trophy, the coach who ran it up should have been smarter than this.

I don't like the whole "Everybody is a special, special, winner!!!" thing too. But sportsmanship is not a new concept and running up the score on a "Girls with learning disabilities High School basketball team" is a little hard to justify.

You're probably right in that it might not be the best idea to field a team. But any decent person who was coaching the winning team would have done something to slow down the slaughter. They could have just sat back in a soft half-court zone rather then trying to steal inbound passes. They could have also used up every last second of the shot clock when they had the ball to keep the total score lower. I'm not at all saying that they should stop trying, but there are ways to back off a little bit while still maintaining the integrity of the game.

Some would argue that it's worse to not play the game like it was meant to be played. I didn't see the game but if they were running fast breaks and things like that then it's unjustifiable.

it's not THAT they kept scoring, it's WHY. The coach wanted to score 100 so he kept having his players shoot 3's and do full court presses keeping his starters in the entire game.

It was bush league, and it doesn't help that the other team was a bunch of girls with learning disabilities.

Interesting article in today's USA Today sports section about the blowing out thing. Granted the guy should have stopped, Urban Meyer said it best "I get paid to score, they get paid to stop me, if they can't thats not my problem." It is fun to watch teams run up the score, but certain situations you have to have a heart. O and i still hate the gators...GO KNIGHTS!!

I don't think he got fired for running up the score. He prolly got fired because he wrote the newpaper and publicly disagreed with the superintendant of the school (his boss). I can understand why a Christian organization would be apologetic about such a lopsided win. It doesn't mean that the coach has to agree with them.
