I was very troubled by the gaping holes that I thought were being ignored by this draft so I began to look at some of the depth players brought in last year that I thought were nothing but temporary fillins until the draft.

For example; I had no idea that Brandon Frye was a freak of an athlete.
This kid isn't just one of the better athlete's in the NFL, he is one of the better athletes in the world.

If they can't find a place for him and coach him up it will be an awful shame.

I was like many wondering why???? with Groves being so injury prone, and Berger not impressive, and Donald Thomas a functional rookie, weren't they drafting a guy like TJ Lang. We already have one, and one with more potential and upside than any of them.

I was very upset that a strong safety wasn't drafted early because of Bell being so injury prone.

Then I started researching this kid, Ethan Kilmer. Wow, another athlete, and with some experience playing special teams. That is, playing very good ST's.

Kilmer ran a 4.35 40 dash and had a 10'10" broad jump and 41 inch vertical. He is listed as 6'0" 205 lbs. and played S,CB,and WR at Penn State. Played DB and ST's for the Bengals until injuries led to his release.

I could definitely see this kid, now that he is healthy, beating out Culver for a roster spot and becoming a starter when Bell moves on.

The thing is he never played football. He was a basketball and baseball player until he walked on at Penn State. He is still raw and he is 25.

The only guy in the draft with those kind of measureables was David Bruton.

We already had good competion at backup S and I hadn't noticed.

I'm still concerned about who will put on the comm helmet and call the plays if Crowders weak knees go out again. Moving Ayodele over was a disaster, we almost lost to KC last year. I can see Torbor backing up Ayodele but not putting on the helmet and calling the plays.

I am wondering if they might move Walden in to play behind Crowder.

What a story Erik is. Apparently he didn't care for school as a young man and he went through hell during his recruitment because of his rep as an academic risk.

He was a HS QB and wanted to play QB in college. He was ready to go to Georgia but found out they weren't going to let him compete at QB so he went looking elsewhere. Anyway he ended up missing the 2003 season because of academic ineligibility.

Apparently he is indeed a very smart kid because he turned it around and and actually won an award for academic achievment his senior year at middle Tennessee State.

So with some smarts upstairs and the mind set of a former QB maybe he could be the man in the middle. He would make a heck of a blitzing ILB if could develope the skills to make the reads.

With Waldens special teams prowess, I don't think they want to cut him, but with the arrival of Wake and the probable return of JT, he may have his best shot learning a new position.

I don't feel nearly as bad about the reaches and questionable picks anymore.

I hope this info can help another tormented soul.

Good post.

And thats the type of thing that fans dont usually see. Sparano and co get to see these guys at every training session and may have high hopes for them. Could be the reason we did'nt target certain positions. I still remain skeptical about the way our draft turned out and what looked to be neglecting positions of need, but as you pointed out they may be happy with who they have in place already.

Only time will tell.

Good post. And think about this as well...

Going into this weekend, CB and WR were pressing needs. I think we may be set up pretty well in the future at both positions.

Vontae Davis was a top ten talent. Sean Smith has everything we want and is a big player. I think in two seasons, we may have one of the better defensive backfields in the NFL.

We all thought we really needed an OLB, but maybe the FO has more confidence in Cameron Wake than we thought.

We addressed the backup QB position for next year if CP is allowed to leave via FA.

So at QB (which last year was insanely unsettled) we appear to be set.

At WR, we could end up having to part with a very good prospect come final cuts (Ginn, Camarillo, Bess, London, Hartline, Turner-6 players with only five spots).

At CB, we infused two incredibly talented players under the tutelage of, by most accounts, one of the best DB coaches in the league (Todd Bowles).

With last year's restocking the Dline, TEs, and getting a franchise LT--it appears to me that we have alot to look forward to vis a vis the future of this team.

And lest we forget, these guys will be tweaking the bottom of the roster all year long. Every player on this team will have to work to improve to see the field, including the punter! I am very optimistic.
