Do you guys think Gerald Riggs Jr. The Undrafter Rookie Free Agent From Tennesee has a chance to crack the line up? or if he'd be a good switch out back for Ronnie?

ya there has been some optimism that he could be a good back up, more of a smaller back then his dad i believe? We will see between minor, morris, kay jay and harris who comes out as the #2

Riggs could be anything from Brown's principal back-up to asking "would you like frys with that Maam?" by September.

RB will start and after that you have Morris, Minor, Harris, and Riggs. Morris and Minor are solid and have good special team skills. But it seems clear that their upside is limited, it is clearly known how good they are and will become.

K.J. Harris, who was in this boat last year has been praised by Saban for his work during last season on the practice squad and in the off season. In what I thought was an important message Saban also complimented him on how he has added special team prowess.

Riggs will need to sparkle in the pre-season and learn to work on the coverage teams to have a chance. The good news is he will likely be given the oppurtunity to show whether he has learned or not. Brown will get limited work, imo, during the exhibition games and again Morris and Minor are known quantities. I believe Harris and Riggs will be given a lot of carries with the hope at least one of them truly steps up.

What more could an UDFA want than a solid oppurtunity?

Minor may be a good special teams player but that's it with him. He hasn't really done squat with us since he was drafted. He has really been a disappointment. I would like to see us replace Travis Minor.

I believe Minor will be replaced this year, but not by KJ or Riggs, Marcus Vick will be our 3rd down back and special teams player, and whatever Saban wants him to do. KJ and Riggs are fighting for Rickys job as primary back up RB. Morris will split duties of back up RB, FB and special teams. I also think this will mean no more Barnes too.

Morris can play both FB and halfback so Barnes won't be needed with Beasley on the roster

I believe that I have yet to see what Kay Jay Harris and Gerald Riggs Jr. can do. It's too early to decide if one of them will make the starting line-up, considering Saban likes to start a 2 back set. I'd rather make a decision until July's training camp. Also, when the preseason begins, I'm sure the picture will become clearer as to who will be the primary back up to Ronnie. I still believe Sammy will be our back up only because he has the most success as one for the Dolphins. Travis Minor's attributes only pertain to special teams. Saban likes Travis' work ethic and is pleased that he'll play anywhere Saban asks him to. Ultimately, if I had to make a prediction right now, I'd pick Morris as our back up and Kay Jay as our runner up unless,Gerald blows everyone out of the water in training camp and preseason.

Could you elaborate as to why you think Marcus Vick will be a 3rd down back? I'm only asking cause I haven't heard anyone say that yet. Did you hear that from somewhere? Or was that your own prediction?

in a couple years, if ricky is gone, i think he could be backing up ronnie.

That's silly man Travis is good don't u remember his rookie year ??
After that we got Ricky and he hasn't even had a real opurtunity since. Considering he is our 3rd RB and backup KR he may not keep a spot but right now he is a good runner with speed and vision, and plenty of experience. Travis has actually always looked pretty good when he's in there.

Travis has done nothing special his entire time here.

You do recall his "big chance" in 2004 to replace Ricky, don't you? He had his shot and didn't do much with it: 388 yards on 109 carries with a pedestrian 3.6 average.

Minor's one of those players that keeps getting roster spots because he can do well on Special Teams. As soon as another RB comes along that's better and can fill 2 roles (especially ST), Travis and his $585K are gone.

Looks to me like Gerald Riggs Jrs. only holdback is health and maybe a little lack of work ethic in his early years at UT.

Gerald Riggs Jr.

From Michael E. Modahl
Position: Running Back

School: Tennessee

Status: Senior

Height: 6-0

Weight: 220

40-Yard Dash: 4.50 (EST)
Positives:
He is big, strong, and has a decent burst. Can go inside or outside, a pounder. Did not claim a share of the Tennessee starting job until his junior year but shined in that role with Cedric Houston. Has showed he can carry a reasonable load as a senior when healthy. Will run between the tackles and has the burst to bounce runs to the outside. Dynamite pedigree, son of NFL star Gerald Riggs.
Negatives:
Health. Was never able to showcase himself long enough as an underclassman to get sufficient carries. His senior year has also been cut short due to injury. His work ethic was also questioned early in his career. Has a seemingly low yard-per-carry average of 4.3.
Overview:
He has not answered the question of if he can carry a full NFL load. Riggs has outstanding size and has all the tools to blossom, unfortunately the season-ending injury as a senior has not given us a clear view. I personally see a lot of Shaun Alexander in Riggs, but he has a long way to go and there can be absolutely no work ethic questions if he is to develop to that level.
I see Riggs as a early-to-mid second round pick right now with the combine his big chance to move up. If he impresses there, as I forecast, Riggs has all the natural tools to leapfrog into the later stages of round one. But Riggs will not top pop's draft rank at #9. Sorry Jr.

Not that Minor is going to be a star or anything but, that 3.6 yard average is exactly what Ricky had, the year before......with a better line.

i thought Riggs was the most impressive back at the recent mini's, anytime a RB caught my eye, it turned out to be him each time.......not that it means anything.
