UPDATE: Iowa OC Ken O'Keefe likely to be named Fins WR coach

Iowa fans are glad to see him leave as O-Coordinator. Big difference there from calling plays to coaching one specific position. I think he will be fine.

O'Keefe did great at Iowa and some younger fans wanted hurry up spread offense 50 point games and that isn't ever going to Iowa's style and will not be happy when new coordinator runs same type of offense. O'Keefe is very good football mind and will great for miami's qb's and players loved him. I am very excited for Miami but bummed that my Hawks lost a great coach and better person

Not his fault Ferentz is a power running guy. He got great production out of Running Backs that were 3rd or 4th string year after year.

And we have people here crying about "Ireland/Sparano hiring people they only know through Dallas/Parcells". Newsflash, everyone hires people they are close to/know.

Except these guys don't suck.

God I hope this is true... I don't care what he is as long as he's not the Iowa OC anymore!
He may be great as a QB coach or WR coach, but not as an OC.

Throwing the ball on first down is something he never figured out...
Running the ball on 3rd and long is something he managed to do quite well.

EDIT... and confirmed....

Obviously wish him luck in Miami... He did a great job with the players he had... just the lack of variety I wasn't a fan of.

Don't think it was the staff hires that people were complaining about it was the Dallas Cowboy players that were has-beens we were signing.

I watched a many iowa games. Don't have the same opinion of him as you. I think he will be a great WR coach.

This is what I read.

We are hearing that Iowa offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Ken O'Keefe will join the Dolphins staff (presumably as quarterbacks coach). We'll keep you posted. Good hire.

Why? Explain why. I have never heard of most of these guys he is hiring,
as I suspect that neither have most of the rest of the fans here either.

I am not complaining about that. Hey he knows far more than I do
about football. So if he likes them at this point so do I. But I am
curious you seem to think he he good.

So "splain" it to me please.

:)

As a fan of the Big Ten, I personally have heard of guys like O'Keefe and Anarumo, so I am not completely in the dark. Though I can't say that the are going to be a success at the pro level, but they are both considered good coaches. Iowa fans were helping to pack O'Keefe's bags last night but you are not a OC at a major college program for 13 years if are not a little bit good at what you do. Though in Miami he is only going to be a position coach, so there is no reason to hate this hire.

My only concern is that besides Sherman, Coyle and Edwards, all of Philbin's new hires have come from the college level or CFL. Not many assistants that have worked in the NFL before.

Marvin McNutt is a sleeper pick IMO and has an obvious connection here.

That is a really good point. It does seem that most of the college coaches he picked are very experienced however and there are a lot more holdovers from the prior staff than eveyone thought,so there is still a lot of experience. Do we know for sure what O'Keefe is coaching, or wr?

according to O'Keefe himself, he's gonna be WR coach. But like Nublar, as a Big 10 fan, I know a bit about him. Iowa fans are happy to see him go, but his offenses really haven't been bad. He's a power guy. A thing to remember is that I believe the last 3 years Iowa has lost their top to RBs each offseason due to off field issues (including Coker, who was the second best RB in the Big 10 this year).

O'Keefe was officially named the wide receivers coach. All the Dolphins need now are a quarterbacks coach, running backs coach and offensive quality control coach to fill out the staff.

Don't forget about the guys that were already on the staff that he's going to keep. It seems like there will be a balance of college and pro coaches. Let's see what happens.

It does look as if Jeff Nixon's name is still on the coaches list for RB on the miamidolphins.com official site. One would assume they would like him back.
