Update on Starks and Soliai

If i could choose Id keep big Paul...especially with Vernon's success rushing the passer on the inside in that "speed" package I think having the big man is pretty important on the first two downs.
That said...Soliai is going to get paid and I think Melton will sign for cheaper coming off an injury and is a superior player...abeit with the injury risk still attached.

Also if Donald somehow makes it to pick #19 you take him. That kid is going to be Geno Atkins part two...dominant.

I don't understand why they aren't even going to make an offer to Soliai.

The defensive line was supposed to be a strength this past year and they regularly disappeared during crucial drives...no big loss in my opinion. There are cheaper DTs out there if average is what you're looking for.

with the rushing defense ranked 24th last year, I'm not sure anyone is a "must keep"

Maybe they don't think he's all that good. Last year we spent too much on Soliai and Starks for below average results. One can only conclude that the decision has been made to move on without them.

Letting Soliai walk is a mistake, Starks can be somewhat replaced by Odrick. There`s nobody on the team who can step into Soliai`s spot... "He's a two down player"... Well those are 2 important fcking downs! You guys think our LBs suck, wait till you watch them try and shed two times the amount of blocks they had to last year...

Excellent point. Many people want to replace a 2 down player with a 1 down player, because playing two gap penetrators up front is disaster against the run.

The thing that gets me is how the people that think Soliai can be replaced are the same people suggesting that he be replaced with another gap penetrator. It's kinda like suggesting your basketball team can dominate by starting 5 guys who are all 5'6 non - shooting point guards. Sure, you will get all kinds of penetration, but your team will be posted up every time, out rebounded and beaten horribly.

This defense needs a big man to take. Double team and control the run lanes.

I think they will be able to find someone lots of DT prospects in this draft.

Hickey is a new GM to the team they must understand that. I would bring big paul back for the right price.

Perhaps our run defense was good, but not great and Hickey wants to fix that with all new players. He's kinda getting to do a clean sweep down in the trenches, on both sides of the line this year.

Paul Soliai & Randy Starks free agent DTs to watch for #Falcons. Have played for Mike Nolan & ATL one of most DL-needy teams in football.

This FA class and Draft is too deep at DT to spend so much on a DT. We should focus on Oline and find another DT in the draft or a cheaper YOUNGER option in FA. I would like one of them back, but not a major concern. Not like our run D was even good with both of them here anyways...

I would bet, with 2-1 odds, that neither will be back this year. How Hickey deals with this is anyone's guess. Grimes was relatively easy as opposed to things to come.

But for the Dolphins, their reality at defensive tackle came into focus long before the league-sanctioned "tampering" window opened.

In short, both Paul Soliai and Randy Starks – who have anchored the middle of Miami’s D-line for the last half-decade – are most likely gone.

There has been no progress on a new deal for Soliai, and all indications are his time with the Dolphins is coming to an end. He’ll likely be a member of another team this time next week.

The same can be said for Starks, who as of Saturday morning had not received a contract offer from the Dolphins. The talented Starks is headstrong – the middle finger he flashed at the Dolphins’ bench in the 2013 opener is proof of that – and many around the league believe that he’s not a personality fit with Miami coach Joe Philbin.

Soliai and Starks are two of 12 Dolphins unrestricted free agents set to shake free on Tuesday. If both leave as expected, the Dolphins will almost certainly pursue a starting defensive tackle in the coming days.
