USA Today: Dolphins appreciate new side of Joe Philbin

Some people forget that Philbin lost his son the year we got him as our coach. You think that's an easy thing to lose a child? C'mon, I respect the man, he kept his head up and believe that maybe he is starting to get over that loss.
Great point man. I'm sure it's still a daily struggle. None of us think about that

meh I don't care if he has the personality of a oak tree, as long as we have a contender.

Should not take until the 3rd year to finally be yourself? Didn't we get that the first 2 years? But I ll take it. Nice to see Joe loosening up, and being a leader...
No more excuses, playoffs 2014. Go Fins...

Coaching is not easy - and it's a constant evolution of oneself in relation to how you approach the game, the team, your coordinators and coaches and the admin/support staff - if you want to get better, win and continue to win.

It's not easy, no matter the level.

Funny they compare to Coughin. I always contrasted Philbin with Coughlin because I felt Philbin needed to toughen up. I agree with what he is doing, by being less "wooden" and more approachable or personable with the players so they feel like they can talk to him and genuinely want to play for him. But I also always felt like he needed more follow through on his rules. If that's handing out consequences for not following the rules or just an old fashioned getting in their faces, whatever it takes. His hands are partially tied by the organization in that regard but not always.
Coughlin had so many consequences that players felt it was unreasonable and he softened up on some of the more extreme ones. His players met him in the middle and it worked. This is a little different IMO. But I'm glad Philbin is at least being more human to his players. Better chance they connect and tune in better to what he is trying to do I think. Now let's see some passion or even some anger when necessary.

This is good news to me. I've had plenty of debates on this forum about how I've viewed his as weak, unengaged and more of an administartor than a leader of men. Maybe this will be the biggest silver lining coming out of the ratfink meltdown.

Different people take different paths to becoming good coaches. Tom Coughlin was on the verge of being fired, realized his players hated him, and changed how he did things. After he did that he won 2 Super Bowls and arguably has become a Hall of Fame Coach.

That's just one example, and I'm not saying that Philbin will do that (though it would be nice), but I do have respect for a guy who can look at what he was doing, realize it's not working, and take a different approach. Compare that to Tony Sparano who just threw a pity party for himself (I understand that Ross and Ireland did him dirty, but he still could have handled his situation better as well).

Another example, Josh McDaniels went to Denver trying to be Bill Bellicheck and it didn't work. Since that debacle his attitude has done a complete 180. Jim Fox changed a bit before going to Denver. Ron Rivera was about to be fired by Carolina before last season but he changed his views.

what I loved about the pic of the players around philbin is that starks was on the forefront line in front of philbin. we need him to be upfront and believe in what the coaches say. he had a vendetta against the coaches last year and played pretty well. also as far as distractions go, granted I enjoyed watching, but rookie HC, rookie QB, chad Johnson, really wasn't a good thing for the fins. how much it changed the season, very little. but put us under a little more media scrutiny from the get go. I figured the second season he would loosed up a lil, and the bullygate didn't really destroy the team, the 0-2 finish did which everyone knows. I think I read last season that he invited everyone over for a pool party or rented out something for a pool party so he was trying to loosen up a lil. he's officially a veteran head coach with a veteran qb so no excuses for a let down this year, they rally behind philbin and they rally behind tanne who's demeanor has seemed to have matured himself since his rookie season and we win. I want to be foreman at my current job, currently im second in command. ive had a buddy tell me before "I would hate working for you, you'll be a hard(butt) and stickler for a while, after that I wouldn't mind working for you cause I know you'd be great at the job" hopefully philbin is at the point now where people wouldn't mind giving there all for him since he can be great for the job instead of a hardbutt or stickler

Yep I know you and I shared those views! I applaud Philbin for the changes! My biggest beef during Bullygate was Philbin claiming he did not know what was happening. Ignorance is no defense even if you didn't know you are still at fault because you are the leader. Actually Joe owned that and said not knowing was not an excuse and he should have known. It is good to see him make those changes and become more involved! People respect and will do more for a leader they like, as opposed to a dictator.

Reminds me a lot of Tom Coughlin changing his ways to relate to players more. Hope to see the same results too.

Suspect having a bad relationship with Ireland didn't help much either, glad he is having fun and is trying to continue improving himself. Even Belicheck took a while to become a good head coach.

Well if we don't make the playoffs this year, Joe will get the axe so it won't matter.

Not necessarily. We've gone 10-6 before and missed the playoffs. I can't imagine Philbin being shown the door after a 10 win season.
