Quarterback Daunte Culpepper, punter Donnie Jones and defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson's were the most notable players missing from the Dolphins' first mini camp under new head coach Cam Cameron.
Culpepper did not receive medical clearance to participate in offseason activities, as he continues to rehabilitate from a late November knee surgery designed to debride articular cartilage wear. Culpepper revealed the procedure —- which he described as "minor" in a team-released statement shortly after the surgery was performed — required a four- to six-month recovery period.
Culpepper played only four games last season after it became obvious he hadn't completely recovered from a major knee injury suffered in Oct. 2005 while playing for Minnesota. Culpepper said he had begun sprinting in Miami's offseason workout program but began experiencing soreness last month and was advised to stop running.
"We're taking the proper steps so we won't have the situation that happened last year," Culpepper said. "I want to make sure when I step out there I'm 100 percent ready to go fully and move forward. That is my whole mindset."
The injury is one of the reasons why Culpepper's future with the Dolphins remains in question. During a post-practice news conference, Dolphins coach Cam Cameron sidestepped when asked whether Culpepper was assured a spot on the team's 2007 roster.
