"With a guy like Patrick and looking at the size he has, I think the hopes are that he could be a good red zone player for us; a third down player, maybe a guy that can make some plays with his body," Sparano said. "He's a big body running down the middle of the field. I was impressed with that. Really soft hands, but we knew that coming out. I thought a little bit better burst and the ability to drop his hips than maybe we even thought on film. That is a good quality to have for a big guy. A big guy, being able to drop his hips with his kind of body can create a little bit of separation that way. That might help us."

I was watching a bunch of vidoe recently on our draft picks. I watched a lot of Turner yesterday. One thing that suprised me is how often a guy that big was about to make cuts and leave the defender 2 steps behind and was wide open to make the catch. He does an excellent job using his body to shield defenders in the redsonze as well.

Now I realize that they haven't put on full pads yet and all this hype about Turner starts to fade a bit. But say he keeps excelling going into full camp and forward. The question would be, why didn't he have more success at USC than he did and be considered such and "under the radar" type of WR?
Was it the system? Was it a QB/WR non-preference thing? Or is he just a late bloomer?

I watched a ton of video also of him. He gets excellent seperation when making cuts. Very smooth and a outstanding route runner with really good hands. He's like a bigger version of Bess. I can't wait to watch this kid play..

He had a great senior season in my books, 10 tds is killer. And his number progress great over his career at USC.

IMO he has a lot less to learn than a lot of rooks coming into the nfl. He already uses his body well and runs crisp routes. He just needs to learn the strength and speed of the game. When we drafted Ginn it was that he couldnt run routes, but he had the speed. Now we get a guy with size that can run routes. I was reading somewhere that he could open he season as the #4....IMO if he continues to impress, there is no reason he can't be the #2 right out of the gate.

If you want to say that Pat Turner is relatively well polished in comparison with other wide-outs then that's fine, but you really shouldn't use USC as the reason why. USC's recent track record of producing wide receivers has been abysmal. Mike Williams was a super bust, Dwayne Jarrett has barely even seen the field in 2 years in Carolina, and while Steve Smith is a nice slot guy, he's nothing more than that.
Come to think of it, USC's recent track record with offensive players in general has been terrible... Think about it, Matt Leinart, Winston Justice, Reggie Bush, Dominique Byrde, Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett... Blah.

Henne and our FO's pre-draft WR tour led us to Pat Turner. I have no reason to beleive he won't be a great player for us. Look at what our FO found in a non-drafted FA in Bess last year.

I do believe most usc players are nfl ready, but it is up to them to step it up. I mean I always thought USC is the nfl of college football or at least it sounds like they get paid like them.

Wow sounds like he should have been drafted higher. I will take it if we stole this guy all day long. Lets hope all the other teams overlooked this diamond just because all the other receivers drafted from USC prior to Turner have turned out to be busts in the NFL. Thats kind of the word on the street on USC Wr's.
Except for a couple of our draft picks this year most of the draft gurus have given us lots of heat for our choices. Which means if those gurus are correct our draft department is a bit lost compared to the rest of the NFL or if those gurus turn out wrong we have some of the best guys in the biz drafting for us. This year will tell us alot along those lines. Last year we were picking at the top of the draft making for much easier choices this year is much different plus some of those picks last year will give us a much clearer picture of how good they really are.

I was so-so on the pick at the time, but I admit I'm warming to it. I'd really like to see his step up. I think he'd be a great asset opposite Ginn. Perfect for Pennington's arm.

I actually wanted him after seeing him at the USC/Sanchez proday. I've never seen anyone 6'5 230 that is ripped like him. That one handed catch he made on a poorly thrown out route by Sanchez was almost as impressive as my boy in my sig IMO. For those that might not have seen it, Pat stopped at the out of bounds boundry and extended one arm and practicaly finger tipped it for the catch.

Turner was a great practice player at SC, but failed to play like he practiced. I hope he does well, but I'm not buying the hype til he proves what he can do on the field.

I haven't seen any hype about him really. Sanchez was lobbying for him saying he is the best WR coming out and that he had ever played with but ESPN and all the so-called experts said we reached for him. I will take Bills expertise over theirs anyday.

My first answer would be that there are so many weapons at USC, everyone has to get in line. Not trying to cop out here, but they run the ball alot and even though they do throw, they use four and five WRs that all get the ball. Or, it could be one of the reasons you listed!
