Whether it's for Green, or Carr, or anyone else, the FO should use Mare as part of a trade package to sign one of these (or another need) players. We don't want to just let him go without any sort of compensation, so instead of offering draft picks, offer him. Just a thought.

That's not a bad idea. Mare would definitely be an upgrade over the Texans kicker Kris Brown.

I think we've got bigger bait to snare with Mare. Carr is on the verge of being released. Nobody wants anything to do with his current contract. Green is edging on release as well, but Miami have agreed to use their second 7th round pick on him if Miami and Trent can agree on an equitable paycut.

Olindo Mare is more valuable than either guy right now, because his contract salaries are reasonable relative to the ones he could be getting if he were to get caught in a bidding war in free agency.

And as per a source close to the Browns, talks between Cleveland and Miami have been "steadily advancing". So, I think we can bait a bigger fish with Olindo right now. Just continue to offer that late 7th for Green, work on getting he and his agent to accept something close to the veteran minimum with a few incentives...and offer nothing for David Carr.

I don't think that's a bad idea either. If teams are really cooling to the idea of giving up a pick for him, either package him in another trade deal we are working on or even to move up earlier in the draft to someone else's pick. Kind of like the Bears/Jets with T.Jones. Like swapping the late round 2nd we got from the Pats for an early round 2nd with someone else. Or our 4th with someone elses 3d. That almost might be more valuable than a 6th or 7th round pick. I think that might make it easier for some teams so that they don't feel they've lost a pick in the process.
:D

ck... if the browns don't come through for mare... isn't it somewhat safe to say we have almost hung ourselves signing feely already.
Or do we have some kind of leverage in trading him elsewhere, I just don't know how since we have already named his replacement.

I see leverage based on Olindo's salaries which were very high back when he signed the contract, but have since been outstripped by SIGNIFICANT salary cap growth that has taken place since he signed the deal.

When we decided to move on with Mare, it wasn't for salary considerations. Jay Feely got a deal that is very similar in all ways to what Mare is currently on. Yet, he's not as good a kicker. Mare could get more than his contractual salaries if he became a FA...especially with about 3-4 teams eager to begin bidding.

In that way Miami will continue to have leverage all the way until final cuts.

One could say wait...for any team that may want Mare too. The Dolphins have no leverage....if they have to dump him sooner or later.

That's the thing though, we don't have to dump him. We already paid him his bonus.

We could be bone-headed perhaps even stupid by keeping him on the roster as our kick off specialist but we can do it if we so please and that's all that matters.

That said, I would definitely like to trade Mare as I'm sure we all would, yet there's no need to be rash. We have the entire offseason at our liege.

As I eluded to, I didn't neccesarily mean that we had to use Mare to get Green (or Carr), just that since many teams (especially us) do not want to give up pick, but also don't want to have to just "release" players getting no value for them (as could happen to us for Mare or KC for Green), we could use him in some kind of trade.. for a player, or to improve our current draft pick position. Since we have Feely, I would prefer to get use out of Mare as a bagaining chip.

Your not going to have two kickers....making that kind of money....one way or the other Mare is history.

I hear you bro, but it does take a roster spot eventually. Even when the first cuts happen, who would you rather have a possible project in a NT or a guy who just kicks off? Not too mention, how important are touchbacks really anyway? If you look at it, it sure didn't improve our record, but 3 more points here and there would have. Lastly, I think there's something to be said for getting loose ends cleared up as soon as possible, especially when every team knows we aren't going to keep him anyway.

Of course, what CK said about having leverage with the salary thing is very significant, but if it doesn't pan out by draft time, he should just be cut. In my humble and uninformed opinion.

I don't think they wanted to take the chance of losing Feely so they signed him early. If they had waited, more than likely one of the teams such as the Browns would have signed Feely instead of shopping for Mare.

.

Os he a great value though? The Dolphins have asked him to restructure the last couple years to bring his numbers down, have they not? At least last year they did... and I recall him NOT bringing his salary down... after which he had one of his (if not his worst) years ever. So how could he be a value?

Maybe it;s just me, but still agree with the old Jimmy Johson school of thought on kickers being a dime a dozen with rare exceptions (Adam Vinatieri), Hell, even Vanderjagt with his impressive stats was suddenly cuttable and replaceable last year. I don;t see kickers as a long term franchise investment worth trading picks for, especially if you are carrying Mare's salary.

What boggles my mind is that we could get NOTHING for Randy MacMichael. Nothing. I can;t believe that. I guess it was the salary.

Oh, and unrelated to the Phins, how the hell does Cato June sign for that little in such a lucrative FA period???

It his name. Cato June. No one wants to pay a lot for a guy with a name like that. I blame his parents.
