"Both win," Joseph told me. "And I've been a 3-4 guy most of my career. But when you come to a place like this and see the defensive personnel you've got, and, in my opinion, it's not broken, you can't all of a sudden go to 34 where you have to re-draft to a defense. That takes time. That takes too much time.

"And I don't want to be a guy who as a coordinator, I'm a 34 guy with 43 personnel driven team. I'm not going to say, 'Well, let's change it,' and set us back two or three years. That's not smart in my opinion. That's not coordinating. If this team had 34 personnel, we'd be a 34 defense. I can do both. For me, it's not a big deal to be a 34 or 43 defense, it's just numbers. It would be a shame to come to a place that's close to being good on defense and then flip it, then you're three years away again. I didn't want to do that."

Smart man, between him and Adam Gase running the offense we should be headed in the right direction. How they use Dion Jordan if he comes back and whether or not they waive Dallas Thomas will tell me a lot.

Holy crap, that sounds like a real coach! Maximizing the talent you have in place is what makes a winner. I like Joseph more and more every time I hear about him. If he translates it to the field, we are going to be in great shape. We've been trying to fit square pegs in round holes forever.

That's a refreshing attitude. It was what Shula did. Csonka, Kiick and Morris=running team; Marino=passing team

Wait what? Using common sense? This is an interesting development, there may be hope after all.

Wow we've been lacking this sort of thinking for about 20 years

This is why, hands down, JOSEPH is the best hire out of the new crop of coaches.

Hold on. Its only mid May. Late July /Aug could provide a bunch of disappointment. ;)

Faith in Joe Philbin and a number of coaches before him was wishful thinking, faith in Gase and Joseph is warranted. We'll see what happens.

This so refreshing... Utilizing the strengths of the players you have, rather than try to fit square pegs into round holes. What a concept, eh?

Sounds just like Gase.

Aggressive and attacking. Gase doesn't categorize himself, he's a different offense every week.

And no one leaves you guessing more week to week than the Pats and Bellichick, the results speak for themselves. Drake, Carroo, Grant and Duarte are going to help Gase and the offense to pick apart weaknesses, and Tunsil replacing Dallas Thomas will give the offense more time to work with. Positive steps.

Vance Joseph has thought about this. He has considered the talent the Miami Dolphins have on defense. He has considered the opposition that defense will face in the AFC East. He has weighed all his options.

And now, even when he closes his eyes, the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator can see his 2016 unit. Although it has never been on the field for a full contact practice much less a live game, this unit is already playing in Joseph’s head.

So what does it look like?

“It looks like a defense that’s playing on their own terms,” Joseph said recently as he sat in the lobby of the team’s practice facility. “I don’t want to be a defense that’s reacting to the offense. I want to play on our terms. That, in my opinion, is the way players want to play. They don’t want to read and react. They want to attack.

“So in my opinion, we’re going to be an attack-style defense from every position — from the D-line, corners, safeties, linebackers. Every position.”

Joseph is a confident man. (You’ll be more convinced of that in a minute.) He is an alpha male who will challenge — no, has already challenged — players to raise a defense that allowed 389 points last year (19th in the NFL) to a unit that is respected if not feared.

That’s why he wants to attack.

“I think it’s better because you play faster and you dictate how games go,” Joseph said. “Now, that’s not going to guarantee you’re going to win every football game. But it will guarantee that you’ll cause havoc. And to be a great defense, you have to be able to cause havoc and turn the ball over and do those things.

“If you’re sitting back and waiting for something to happen, sometimes it’s not going to happen for you. And the better people you play, they’re not going to give you the ball. You have to take the ball away. In my opinion, players want to play fast. They want to play on their terms. Just being aggressive versus 2016 NFL offenses, it’s mostly a pass game, it’s mostly a one-back run game, so why not be aggressive?

“Your risk goes down when it’s one back in the game and three wide receivers. Protections are weaker, the run game gets softer. So why sit back and let them dink and dunk you? And now it’s second-and-4 and third-and-1 all the time? Instead of being a negative play or a turnover?”

This!

For those blessed enough to be part of Dolphin fanship through the 70's and 80's saw a relentless commitment to coaching to your talent - scheming to your talent.

Shula admitted to struggling with Marino's genius. But he did - he gave him everything he ever wanted - he went after outside speed - Terry Kirby with release valve plays -

I miss seeing the Dolphins be really good!

And I too believe that Gase has done a remarkable job so far.

I am truly impressed and hopeful. IT has to end sometime (theoretically) so why not now?

Music to my ears!

He is literally describing the 2015 defense, Play 5 yards off, allow everything underneath and never force 3rd and long. I'll bet the vets are ecstatic about this new mindset.
