From 2011, when Joseph was the DBs coach in Houston.

This doesn't go into any particular depth, but it's interesting to see him get on the whiteboard and go through the main coverage principles of this one gapping 3-4 attack. If only the Dolphins were fan friendly enough to shoot this kind of stuff.

If the Dolphins tried shooting this stuff during the Philbin years it would have embarrassed all concerned. One the level of bringing crayons and coloring book to physics class.

Bill Lazor is a great speaker. Very articulate, very good in front of the cameras.

Unfortunately, I don't think you could shoot a series like this with him, because you can only talk so much about bubble screens and three yard crossers.

That's a good look at Joseph's teaching style. Thanks for the share.

I wonder if the fact that Earl Mitchell was in Houston at the same time Joseph was coaching defensive backs there makes it more or less likely that Mitchell will stick with the Dolphins. Hopefully less likely. I'd also like to see Quinton Coples bulk up and move inside. He doesn't belong on the edge, especially not as a "will he drop or won't he" player.

Terrence Fede is going to have to become our new Kenny Mixon -- a two down player who gets spelled by Cam Wake, who should be moved into the Trace Armstrong phase of his career. That makes adding another edge guy one of our top priorities for the offseason. The 3-4 defense, even this one gapping style of it, lives or dies on finding Von Miller types -- pass rushers who can drop into coverage without embarrassing themselves at times if needed.

Obviously we have some deficiencies at linebacker. Between Misi, Jenkins and one of the young guys (Hewitt?) maybe we can make it work. But with injuries to the topline guys we're gonna have to do better at adding bodies than we did last year.

And obviously the secondary is a concern. Jamar Taylor looked more lost than Jack Nicholson at the end of The Shining. Grimes is... **** off, get the **** out of here, Grimes. Bobby McCain showed the most promise of the young guys but he's also small. A clear slot guy. But of course that's Brice McCain's natural position and Joseph knows that because he coached McCain all three years Joseph was in Houston.

The cupboard's pretty bare, gents.

Koa misi as a 3-4 olb is something i can live with in 2016. **** is not going to happen overnight. His injury history is the most scary proposition .

But Cam Wake as a weakside third down pass rusher opposite of him would get the job done. You would have to find another guy in the draft to come in and play the early downs.

Jenkins as the weakside ILB seems set, but you may have to settle in on Sheppard as the MLB next to him.

We have no third round pick, and we desperately need a CB. If we got CB/edge rusher those first two rounds, I would be happy. I am not foolish enough to put any faith in McCain or Jordan.

NT will be interesting, again, may have to settle on Earl for a year. This complete makeover aint happening, there are going to be guys in spots we may not love, but 2013 set us back three years, and this is year three. As much as I dont care for Tannehill, I do realize if he proves his worth, 2017 we really can add pieces to this team, but if he stays flat, I am going after Watson or Kaaya.

We have to stay away from oline in this draft, at least early. Get a fancy guard in FA and upgrade your third tackle. Battle royal with Turner/Douglas/Thomas/other pickups for that other guard spot.

Team needs another year before we really can attempt to compete.

"see right here, most would take a shot down field, maybe a mid range pass attakc, but I like to run gum...or the Double bubble to catch the defense offsides"

"Ok, here is another example of a screen I like to run, you see it is slightly modified from the other 13 before in that I don't use Landry on this one"

I had the understanding that Fede was a decent move athlete coming out of Marist. I'm not trying to say he was Leon Lett, just that he had upside. I don't have his testing in front of me. Frankly, he looks pretty stiff and lacking burst to me. Maybe he can be an ok backup if he has a really strong motor, but this is a bottom of the roster type of guy. As a seventh rounder, I'd say that's right in line with, or above, reasonable expectations. Kenny Mixon is interesting but he was pretty good setting the edge and playing the run at a fairly good level.

I will talk to my cousin about it. He's the new managing producer for the team.

It's interesting to run the parallel between Paul Soliai and Jordan Phillips. I'm in a bit of a hurry so can't look everything up so bear with me. I believe Soliai was roughly 6'5 340 and Phillips is 6'6 and maybe 335. Early on, both played high and easily got pushed out against the run. Soliai was pretty bad for two years. Then, it clicked and he became an absolute dominant run defender permanently. Will the same thing happen with Phillips? Both are huge, tall, and had this adjustment of being too tall and not getting the low man wins. Soliai became excellent. I would say Phillips probably has more natural athleticism and can rush the passer to a degree potentially better.

I don't think you can count on Phillips as a dominant run defender yet. Miami needs to hedge with another run defender. DeAndre Coleman scored pretty well. He's in the mix. But someone more trustworthy to plug the run while Coleman and Phillips prove themselves.

If Joseph plays multiple fronts, no way am I trusting Phillips as my nose in a 34 look. I have to hedge that with someone else. If anything, Phillips may even be a 34 end opposite Suh until he proves himself on the nose.

We can't do things like we did last year and just say, "eh Walt Aikens is our safety if injury prone Delmas gets hurt." Need deeper thinking.

just a thought.....

given that once of Gase's most prominent quotes on this board is "players before scheme" it would be pretty odd for us to switch to a 3-4 given our massive contract with Suh....

just my take.
