I think the light-switch has definitely gone *ding* in his head.

Check it out:

This from Nick Saban's Press Conference today.
(On how Vernon Carey’s weight-loss has helped his playing ability) - “Vernon’s really having a good camp. He’s playing well. I think that all started with last year, creating awareness of conditioning, being in shape and an efficient, effective weight for him to function and be able to sustain - going into this off season, having a little more discipline and not getting way out of whack. I think that’s what gets the big guys. There’s really no season for diet. What you eat, what’s healthy for you to eat, what’s a good weight for you – there’s really no season for it, not in-season, out of season, before the season, after the season. It has to be a habit you develop on a year-round basis, so that you don’t get big patterns of weight-gain and weight-loss, which is probably not healthy. I don’t think Vernon got out of whack this winter and had more self-discipline to get where he needed to be early and get in condition. I think it’s helped his quickness, his ability to run and move and his ability to sustain.â€Â

...And, listen to Vernon's interview on the site. He talks about his work in the offseason to get into shape. (8-1-06.)

You don't have to hope Dom.

The proof is in the pudding.

i like anyone thats helping ronnie get more yards

And as recently as 3 months ago some on this site were labeling him a bust.
From what I've seen over the years it takes O-linemen 3-5 yrs to really develop. There are a few exceptions (Richmond Webb, Ogden etc.)

Awesome. Hopefully he can learn some better run blocking skills.

Actually if he lost wheight I would be more interested in him working his footwork sliding to the edge on pass protection, so he can play LT and have the more massive and meaner Shelton play RT...

I like that idea !

Carey
James
Hadnot
Anderson
Shelton

That would be huge...1665 combined pounds...

Nah Shelton's always been a LT. You don't just up and switch a career LT to RT just because he's big. It's not the type of move that adds value, but rather the type that saves value when something bad happens (e.g. if Vernon Carey went down injured and we're in bad shape at RT maybe Shelton moves over to RT so that McIntosh can play LT).

Carey's played RT a while now. He played some in college, played there his rookie year some, played there all last year. You want to give him some continuity so that he can learn a position. Keep switching him around and it stunts his growth.

Getting lighter doesn't make him a worse run blocker necessarily. It might make him a better one because he's more energetic but still retains most of his power. He's a powerful guy...but not quick at all. Why mess with a good thing? Keep him at RT and let him try and improve his run blocking there.

Shelton was a RT most of his late years at Zona, and sucked at LT in Cleveland, and has always been known as a better run blocker tha pass blocker, while Carey is a better pass blocker, losing wheight most likely made him more mobile than stronger, I mean its pretty logical if you lose wheight you are faster, if you gain it you are stronger...
