What is the consensus on how Vernon is going to do at Left Tackle this year?

My opinion is that he will be solid and once training camp ends and the regular season starts its going to be like he is going up against the B squad after having to face Miami's D all through training camp! :)

Maybe wishful thinking but come on...Ginn hasn't signed yet so its a slow day!

I'm not as optimistic about Carey's transition to the left side. We drafted him mainly to be our left tackle of the future, and when he was given a chance to start there early on in his career he failed. Of course very few rookie LT's do excel early on in their careers so it would be unfair to say that he can't handle the job. He obviously is a better player now than he was two years ago, but LT and RT are very different positions. A lot of the "experts" say that he is too big to be effective against speed rushers.

I think he will be about average for the position, but I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up back at right tackle before the season is over.

I thought that the reason they moved him to the right side wasn't because he failed but because D-Mac played better on the left than the right?

If MacIntosh was a decent LT, why is he gone?

I think the argument that Carey was moved to RT from LT because there wasn't a RT is rather specious. Right tackles are a whole lot easier to find than LTs. In fact, a lot of guys not good enough to be decent LTs can play RT very well. It's an easier position because the RT isn't out on the end of the line all by himself against the best DEs like the LT.

It could very well be true that MacIntosh played LT better than Carey did in 2004, but that doesn't mean that Carey can be a competent LT in 2007. There are some real concerns about his footwork and quickness.

Vernon should be watching some game film of Marcus McNeill from the Chargers last year. McNeill played in the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Cam loved the way he uses his long arms in pass protection. McNeill is a little bigger than Vernon, so if Marcus can do it, then so can he.

Vernon needs to get his technique mastered ASAP. I hope he's in excellent shape for training camp. We need to have the kinks worked out of our Oline by Week 1. The Oline needs to have plenty of meetings, lots of time in the film room together. Even hang out together off the field like I hear the Chargers Olinemen do. If our Olinemen do some of the same things other successful Olines are doing in the NFL, they are likely to get some of the same results.

"That loss to New England will definitely fuel us in our training for this year," Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick says. "It's a dynamic team. The young guys fuel the older guys, and the older guys show the younger guys how to work."

"Our offensive line has been together pretty much for three years; we have a chemistry on that line that I don't think you find anywhere else," Dielman says. "We hang out together off the field. It's the kind of chemistry you don't see too much of in the NFL anymore because of free agency and the changes that go on with teams from year to year."

I never said that Mac was a decent LT, I just said that Mac played LT better than he played RT which could be the case if someone is very used to playing on the left side of the line.

He failed at RT, and RG early in his career too. Wannstedt didnt bring him along very well at all.

specious?

I think he would do allright. I hope he does. One thing we have to remember is that very few Left Tackles start and excel right away. SOme need time to develop. Even ones that become great at some point. Also remember that Carey did not have Hudson Houck his rookie year to start developing him, he had sorry @$# TOny Wise. So that should help. Careys seems to be more confident this time around to take on the challenge. Lets not be fooled guys one of the biggest motivations he has that gives him that confidence is "MONEY", remember Left tackles get paid a lot more than right tackles,, and he's aware of that, so why not try to become an effective LT in this league and get paid like one, remember i believe either this year or the next year is his contract year. Money is always the best motivation.

I think we can blame Wanny for alot but its not his fault that Carey is a slow learner.

actually i think you missed the point.... Wanny & Co. forced him to play 3 different positions..... kinda hard to learn something when your teacher keeps changing his mind on what you should know. Carey was mishandled, saying he's a slow learner would be pulling things outta yer arse.

I think if Jason Peters and Jammal Brown can do it, Vernon should be able to do it. Having Pete Kendall next to him will help out alot.

if he (or even the rest of the line) doesnt perform well, do you guys think it will have an impact the future of Houck?

Agreed. Carey did well at RT after plenty of struggles. I think that he's ready to do LT now, but I also think that he is the best we could do via draft and free agency. If we had a chance to take a quality LT, we would have, and not Ginn, in my opinion.

I think Carey will work out, but if we had a blue-chip LT fall to us in the draft next year, I would be all over moving him back to RT.

What I don't know is what side he played on at UM. I thought he played RT his junior year and RG his senior year. Is that right?
