It doesn’t seem that long ago that Jared Odrick arrived in South Florida as a Dolphins first-round pick, yet he now finds himself as one of the elder statesmen along the defensive line.

In terms of tenure, only Randy Starks and Cameron Wake have been part of the Dolphins defensive line longer than Odrick, who is getting ready to embark on his fifth season.

“It does go by fast,” Odrick said during a recent appearance on The Finsiders. “It’s kind of crazy. You don’t feel old, but then you start realizing how much advice you’re giving to rookies or younger guys or new guys to the team. It’s kind of like, woah, I sound like Ronnie Brown or I sound like Ricky Williams or I sound like Anthony Fasano, guys like that when I came in, Yeremiah Bell and a bunch of other guys who were giving advice. It kind of took me back for a second. I’m like, man, five years, it’s crazy.”

"I played all over the D-line and I think that’s one thing I bring to the team,” Odrick said. “One of my attributes is all of my attributes. Diversity can help you and hurt you in that you don’t get to play one position, especially the position you think you’re best at, just because I do wear many hats for this team.

“Playing that 3 tech (defensive tackle) is something I’ve done very well throughout my career, collegiately and professionally, and something I think I’ll continue to do even better.”

Odrick figures to once again be a key part of the defensive tackle rotation along with two-time Pro Bowl selection Randy Starks and free agent acquisition Earl Mitchell.

Sounds like he is impressed with the young guys.

We’ve got a lot of young guys that are very talented, athletically gifted, guys that have a real shot at making this team,” Odrick said. “We had a lot of free agent guys in our (defensive line) room for this offseason. It’s going to be tough when it comes down to cutting guys and saving guys. All the rookies in our D-line room have really stood out. Not to slight the prior years, the previous years that guys were coming in undrafted, but this class is something to look at.”
