These two links I have posted are very telling of how winning organizations build a team. Haven't you learned from the past mistakes like Redskins and more recently "The Dream Team" Eagles last year that free agency isn't where you create a team it's where you tweak adding parts here and there. If we look at the elite teams in the NFL: Steelers, Giants, Ravens, Texans, Green Bay, Saints they have added a total of
4
new free agents combined. I didn't included their own players they re-signed, just new additions. All I hear is Fireland, protest, don't buy season tickets, that we are the laughing stock, and nobody wants to play for us nonsense. Do you listen or just here when Philbin says he wants to build his team through the draft. Philbin formed his philosophy on team-building with the Green Bay Packers in recent years and the Green Bay way is to build almost exclusively through the draft. The Packers have not signed a free agent in two offseasons and Philbin believes, at least in part, that's the right way to do it. Remember how far Aaron Rodgers slipped in the draft and that Alex Smith was the number one pick that year. Yes we haven't been lucky recently and sometimes that's all you need in the NFL to turn things around quickly. So step away from the ledge, take the knife away from your wrist, and put the gun what till the draft to see what our team looks before your so quick to judge.

I do agree big names don't always mean great teams. At least lets wait and see what we can do in the draft before we form protest groups with signs and torches. One thing for sure, big names are really big paychecks leaving a team financially hobbled at times.

Im with you buddy

Wish I could "Thanks" this post. That is the first sane post I've seen in a while.... Except my own, of course.

While i agree that drafting is the way to build a team...Miami hasnt been very good at it for 20+years...All i wanted was a QB because we had no shot at getting Luck or RGIII without losing the farm in the meantime.

We need to get better at drafting!!

I think the Phins have upgraded a few spots, filled a couple spots, and have a few more to fill. Here's how i see it so far:

Philbin > Sparano
Garrard > Henne
Hicks > Columbo
Messam > Hilliard
Westerman = Langford
R. Marshall = W. Allen
? - J. Taylor
? - Y. Bell
? - B. Marshall

Three players to replace. Taylor wasn't really a force like he used to be, Bell was good in run support, and Marshall was very productive most of the time. If they can fill those three spots with more productive players they will have improved quite a bit from last year.

GO PHINS~!

Anyone remember Shula's last season? (1995) We were "just a player or two" away from the SB, having just lost a terribly disappointing AFC championship to the Chargers the year before. We proceed to pick up underachieving hacks like Eric Green, Terrell Buckley, Trace Armstrong, and Steve Emtman. (Ok, Trace only underachieved the year we got him). We all know the result in the playoffs - getting blown out by the Bills in the first round! Ever since then, I haven't put any stock in getting FAs.

I love the idea of building through the draft; I just don't trust Ireland with doing so.

Well, Buckley and Armstrong played well for us for years. Emtman and Green were bums.
The reason we lost to the Bills was we had no answer for Thurman Thomas. We were close, we just got paired up with the Bills team to often...that was physically superior to us.
If you trade for a quality free agent, that is fine. But picking through other teams trash cans..ala Ireland..is not the way to build a winner.

Why would teams already elite add many big FA names? Its not like these teams never picked up more FAs to become elite. I also noticed that you didn't include the Patriots. Are they not elite all of a sudden?

Teams are built through both smart FA moves and draft. You don't create more holes at important postitions in the offseason, with your only plan to back yourself up is the draft.

I'm glad you brought up New England. They actually sign bargain free agents. None of their big name free agents have ever panned out. Adalius Thomas was a complete flop for them. Now they still need a pass rusher as much as any team in the league but they didn't sign the biggest free agent of all at that position, Mario Williams. As a matter of fact, they let one of their best pass rushers, Mark Anderson, leave because he wanted too much money.

NYinBostonFin took the words out of my mouth. The top teams rarely have a need to fill many positions in FA because they're already good.
