The Miami Dolphins are adding a respected veteran executive as a consultant this off season, and don't be surprised if he's a major influence to general manager Chris Grier.

Bobby Grier, Chris' father, will join the Dolphins as a consultant working in the scouting department a year after retiring from the Houston Texans, where he served as a senior personnel adviser.

Grier had been with the Texans since 2000 and was previously the associate director of pro personnel. Before that he worked for the New England Patriots' personnel department, overseeing the pro and college scouting departments from 1995-1999.

"Bobby's like the Wizard of Oz. He's been a valuable resource to me in learning how to be a GM with his help and perspective," Texans general manager Rick Smith said last year when announcing Bobby Grier's retirement.

Your thoughts? :ponder:

Got no problem with this we could use an experienced person looking at things
Was instrumenntal in the JJ watt pcik and was the only NFl exec to call Loyd Carr about Tom Brady even though they did not draft him

I would certainly rather Chris be his father's puppet than Tannenbaum's.

Seems like a solid move. This is a big draft in front of us and we need to nail it.

Thanks. I did not know those tidbits, but since the Texans seem to have made a lot of good choices under his watch, I'm on board with it. Also, at this part of the evaluation process, he surely brings in alternate scout analysis on many many different players. That breadth of view can only help.

After a top coach, there is no more valuable resource to a franchise than a good personnel department. Yes, talent matters, but the personnel department impacts getting more of those talented guys every year, so their impact is magnified.

For too many years the Dolphins have struggled with mediocre to poor coaching and an abysmal personnel department. Who cares about your salary cap if the players aren't good enough and they're being coached by just another guy?

The NFL talent is shockingly close from top to bottom. Spotting one more star, getting a couple more role players that fit your coaches system, understanding how to build unit and team chemistry, getting enough guys who can stay healthy long enough to carry the season through ... often times these are enough things to allow the coaching staff to make the group a good team. Yes, luck is important, but it's not enough. Let's take the opportunity to add scouting value at every opportunity.

Welcome aboard Mr. Grier; we're very happy to have you!

Worst gm in the history of gms. Makes Ireland look like a personnel savant

Its not like our scouts can get worse.

Amazing that the whole front office seems to have a job for life, a decade of bad drafting just doesnt seem relevant

He is a very smart man
