With Booker's injury, and with Welker emerging as a legit WR... do you guys see Vick being activated to relieve Welker of some of his return duties? I would still want Welker to return punts, just because he is so dependable and smart about it... but I would love to relieve him of his kick returning duties since I think he is going to be run into the ground if he keeps up this workload.

Thoughts?

It's possible, but Saban hasn't made any such move yet. Only reason would be to give Wes a break on kick returns.

Thats the reason why I think he would be activated. Not to use him as a WR as much as we would us him as a KR...

I would think they would just use Minor to do returns, since he's got a lot of experience at it.

eh... he doesnt do too much for me as a return man. He is a good ST player, especially on kick coverage... but I want someone who is more explosive than Minor returning the kicks.

Despite the question mark, your thread title is still misleading...

"Should Vick be activated for ST?" is a better title for you thread.

Sorry... didnt realize it was that misleading. I put the "?" to imply it was speculation...

Anyway... what are your thoughts on the topic?

I'm not sure VICK got enough reps during pre-season to be pulled in from the PS just yet ....

It would be nice if he had -- and really shown something ...

Right now, today, I would have to say it's HAGANs turn to show what he can do as a WR ... and settle for MINOR, since he is a 'known' quantity as a return guy.

Oh, I wasnt suggesting that Vick should get reps at WR over Hagan. He was on the PS for a reason. I am just saying with an opening at WR, and a need to relieve Wes of some kick returning duties... Vick might be a great option.

i think fred gibson has a better chance of being activated as we are more trying to cover for the loss of booker then special teams

I dont really think we would need Gibson due to the loss of Booker, because the only time we would use Gibson as a WR would be in 5 WR sets with CC, Wes, Hagan, and Russel ahead of him.

And dont you feel a need to start relieving Wes of some of his returning responsibilites with the amount we are using him in the passing game?

Given our injury situation at WR, DB and on ST, I would expect us to elevate someone from the PS to fill our open roster spot. Vick, Gibson, or Mitchell strike me as the best odds.

I say that we start making Vick play CB in practice and see if we cant make him useful to this team. He didn't do a good job in preseason returning kicks, and Welker is too good to take that job away from him. Like the announcers said Welker is instant field position.

Ya, but arnt you concerned about the pounding he will take as the KR & PR, coupled with the amount we are using him at WR?

He does take a beating all game, but I also think his roles as the KR and PR get him going in the game before he has a chance to go in as a WR. I think if anybody Wes has shown that he's made of rubber. No matter how hard you hit that guy or throw him down be bounces right back up. But it does suck the beating he takes.
