Palm beach post is reporting DT Kevin Vickerson will not require surgery as his injury was not a tear but a severe strain. He is already running and months ahead of schedule vs if he had surgery. As he is on IR he is not eligible to play this season unless he goes to a different team. As that wion't happen expect him to be in top condition for next years Training camp.

Bouncing back: The reversal of fortune for rookie defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson has been eye-opening. It looked like Vickerson would face major knee surgery after his pre-season ACL injury against the Falcons. But an MRI revealed just a strain and Vickerson, who is on injured reserve, now is running and rehabbing.

Good thing, I thought it was a quick move to put him on IR, but better safe than sorry.

That's really good news. We all know how some players never come back fully from an ACL tear. So, the fact that it was only a strain (even though all injuries, even tears, are called strains) is good news. I think we put him on IR because his rehab was going to be long enough that it wasn't good business-sense and football-sense to keep that roster spot open for him.

I thought Vickerson would be eligible to return after 6 or so games. Are you sure that once a player is on IR they are out for the whole season?

Yeah, you're confusing that for the PUP list. You can be eligable to come back if you are on that after six weeks.

Yes, that 6 weeks thing is when the players are put on the PUP list which is different.

Vickerson is a value as is Manuel Wright. Saban knows we are old there , and these two guys are talented, and we will see if the Saban system can be a good influence on them . I am sure it will. And we will have two great young DT next year.

That's SWEET NEWS!!!

He may never have been the same after ACL surgery, including a long rehab...

Now, he can avoid surgery and totally focus on getting stronger/bigger/better for next year....

Vickerson was a steal in the draft.......wait and see. I'm not necessarily saying pro-bowl (but not ruling it out down the road), but he'll be a contributor (maybe starter). That's INCREDIBLE value for a 7th round pick---especially at the DT spot. RARELY do DT's in low rounds contribute much, if anything, but Vickerson will be an exception.

AWESOME!! :D :D :D

I think this was known by Saban and Co. It'll take him a while to rehab, and he isnt ready to make it into the rotation yet. Saves a roster space.

It's actually a blessing in disguise. We would of had to cut some one had this not happened. And we picked up Tim Mcgill from the jets (They are still mad about that). Overall we have solid depth and some promising talent. Excellent.

If his rehab goes well can he practice with the team even though he cannot play because of his IR status? If he could get some practice time in this year towards the end of November and December it would greatly accelerate his training for next year.

I don't know if he's allowed to suit up and go hit the pads with the rest of the team or go work on the scout team or anything but he is definitely allowed to rehab, work out, and go to all meetings and film sessions and be a part of what is going on.

Nobody has asked the question yet but I'll pre-empt them...the PUP list is reserved for guys who were injured BEFORE the start of training camp, so no we could not have just placed Vickerson on the PUP list and then waited for him to come back between weeks 6 through 9. The choice was keep him on the roster for 6-8 weeks while he is injured and can't contribute, or put him on IR and lose him the whole year. They chose IR, and I can see why.

Still, I'm very happy to hear it was not a torn ACL. Those can really set you back a long time. But, since he suffered the injury on one of those questionable cut blocks, the fact that he only severely strained the ACL rather than tearing it shows that he may have a pretty good tendency to not get badly hurt. By all means I thought he should have torn the ACL.

What happened with Tim McGill? How did we acquire him? Was he cut?
