Volin: Ryan Tannehill continues to impress

And Anthony Fasano has been split out at wide receiver more than we’ve ever seen from him in his five years in Miami.

Interesting. Not exactly my favorite idea but it's been done so little I still look forward to seeing how he looks. It's completely new.

Love it. Sounds like Philbin/Sherman realize the nice canvas they have to work with when it comes to Fasano.

* Monday was Garrard’s turn to play with the starting offense. Moore should get most of the snaps at the next practice (on Wednesday), but Tannehill might vulture a few reps. The quarterback battle is too close to call right now, though Garrard appears to throw with better velocity and accuracy than Moore does.

I saw this earlier on Twitter.

Ben Volin has been the most staunch supporter of Matt Moore throughout the off season. I don't blame him. Volin doesn't pretend to be an evaluator so he's not going to get all cute about this guy or that. Objectively you look at the facts and they are what they are. Matt Moore had like a 98 passer rating during the final 9 games of the season and led the team to a 6-3 record. And they didn't just eek out victories as was all too common in the Sparano era...they put away games against lesser opponents and hung tough with tough opponents (like the Super Bowl champion Giants). Then you've got all these league coaches and general managers all saying the same thing, Dolphins have a good quarterback in Matt Moore, they're all interested in seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes there. Have I disagreed? Sure. But those are the objective facts and evidence to go on, if you're a reporter.

For even Ben to end up having to tweet out (paraphrased) "It's hard not to notice that Garrard throws with better velocity and accuracy than Matt Moore"...to me that's a sign that there isn't just some weird media craziness going on, David Garrard really is winning this competition.

I would like to see video of him under pressure as there are conflicting reports on his performance. Granted, it is Omar saying Tannehill struggled under pressure but he is the only one reporting it. Izzy Gould also gave Tannehill good reviews.

Anyone happen to be in attendance today?

It's early and it's practice, not games. The pressure elements of the game are hard to recreate in practice to where you know how the players will respond during games. That I imagine is one of the reasons Matt Moore is more of a game guy than a practice guy.

I think it's safe to say our O will have a little more imagination than it did under Sparano.

i think tannys one of those guys that's gonna look better against a true live rush cause of his athleticism and his feel for pressure...i think that kids gonna get out of some things...color me not a fan of lining up fasano wide...michael egnew if thats not you what the hell is

It's Michael Egnew too. And Charles Clay.

Joe Philbin floats his tight ends off the line all the time. Tom Crabtree, Andrew Quarless, Jermichael Finley, Donald Lee...all of them.

Charles Clay is going to be a monster in this offense. I still have wet dreams about him destroying Brandon Flowers in Man on Man coverage last year.

It's so interesting when you have players that can play multiple positions. You could have Clay, Bush, Hartline, Johnson and Fasano in the game and we could line up with 5 WR to a two back set, that creates mismatches.
I think in the end if the battle is between Garrard and Moore for the starting QB there probably isn't too much in it, Garrard clearly suits the WCO offense better but Moore did have a reasonably good end to last season. Whoever Philbin picks I can't see them having that much more impact on the game than their backup.

And this clearly should help us as an offense going forward...maybe not initially, but I like what the offense is showing early. Hopefully it continues into preseason and into the regular season. I really believe Philbin and Sherman are going to get the best out of our players' strengths on offense.

Something I took notice of today again was that Marshall took reps for Vontae on the outside with the #1's on defense. CK and Hoops do you think this could be due to the fact that they want him to learn that position as well as Vontae learning to cover the slot receiver in nickle. If I recall last year Vontae covered Welker in the 2nd Pats game and pretty much shut him down in the first half. Then Vontae got hurt and Welker killed us in the 2nd half. Could Coyle be doing this to better prepare our DB's for tougher matchups in the slot ala Welker or even Hernandez? Just a thought.

Re Fasano on the outside... it's all about match ups and how the d reacts.... do they keep a CB outside on Fasano therefore leaving a OLB on a Slot WR.. say Pruitt with all that alleged speed? which then potentially puts the number 3 on an Inside/Middle backer.. that could be the likes of Clay/Bush/Miller...

And if a Defense puts an OLB/SS outside on Fasano, then you know where the ball's going... 'outside'!

It's all about match-ups... and, one of my favourite things to do as a OC... 'Dictate to the defence' what's going on...

I can't wait to see us come out in a 3 TE set with 2 RB's. Then they could flex at least two TE's and a RB, Clay and probably Egnew as well as Bush. Those would be some serious mismatches against LB's no matter who you are playing.
