I dont understand all the negativity when evaluating Vontae on a standpoint of on the field and off the field. "Oh hes a nutcase" "Hes just like Vernon" "He's full of himself"

He has all the skills to become a great player. Explosive and Smooth Hips, Great footwork, Strong punch at the line and able to jam, etc.

But the thing to look at is how Vontae conducts himself. A good sampling of this would be the interviews on Aquavision. You can tell by the interviews that Vontae isnt a headcase and doesnt value himself before the team. He is like a little kid in a candy store. Every question he is asked he gives 110% and all his attention is to that person. He then goes in depth and wants to talk about whatever is asked, no matter what it is. You can see that he loves the game of football and just wants to be a great player. Hes learning from mistakes like he said, and you can see the desire and drive in him.

He's kind of a *******, but I love his eagerness for the game. I'm all about Vontae and I'm not concerned about him yet.

You bring up some good points. You may very well be right, I hope you are. The problem comes from the NFL game is about being able to think fast and accurately. Vontae reminds me a bit of Jason Allen, in that he has ALL the physical tools but just doesn't get it mentally. Jason is starting to get it and maybe Davis will also, but I really think it might take awhile.

I also think he needs to lose that big friendly smile after he makes a bonehead play. Coaches and fans, a like,l may see that as not taking the game serious enough.

He is an extremely likeable kid, it is hard not to like a guy with a big grin on his face like Vontae, but he can't keep doing the things he was doing in the first game and expect the coaches to have much confidence in him. I am with you however, and still think/hope he will get it all turned around.

The problem also comes from how well/quickly Sean Smith is seemingly picking it up. I think we are making a mistake by constantly comparing them. People learn at different speeds. I think he will be alright.

I agree with what you said, he is a rookie and like I expected he has made some young rookie mistakes. I am sure that he will learn from them and become a much better player down the road.

why are u checking his hips for

I for one, am in favor of a ****y corner back. we need it. its called swagger. Davis & Smith both have it on the field.
Davis can talk a game on the field from everything i've read, love that! talk the talk just make sure you back it up. i think he can.

When a rookie struggles it really means nothing. Most rookies struggle at every position in the NFL, you're very very lucky if you draft a player and they produce like a vet in their first year.

Completely agree. He will be a stud.

I didn't think he looked that bad in the game against the Jags. The penalties were stupid, but those can be fixed. If he was blowing coverage like Mr. Green, then I would have been concerned.

People totally ignore that he was very young when we drafted him. He was 20 years old. Some other players were 22 and 23 years old when they were drafted this year.

Larry English who was picked before Vontae will be 24 in January. Sean Smith just turned 22.

I would also like to know where all these naysayers were when Surtain didn't start in his rookie season and didn't look very good. And I would like to know where all the Sam Madison bashers were when it took him awhile to get acclimated in the NFL.

Vontae will be good. If he came out next year he'd definitely be a top 10 pick.

My prediction is the Vontae will be the next Terrell Buckley... he'll make some great plays and then he'll give up some big plays trying to gamble in coverage ... say when going for the ball or giving up a PI at a crucial moment in the game... he's competitive but he's still got a lot to learn... and he'll make us as dolfans ecstatic and frusterated all in the same game

It is way way way too early to start comparing this guy to Jason Allen. In any way. Vontae's problem on Monday is he was simply too excited. He got carried away and was trying too hard. Like Swantoon said, He had the 3 penalties but I didn't see any blown coverage.
