First of all I'm sorry but Vontae is still the best CB on this team, he was better than Smith or Marshall were last year and I find it very hard to believe he got worse or those guys who have been in the league for several years got better in one offseason. Vontae came in a little out of shape but on talent alone he's the best defensive back on the team by a decent margin IMO. I just hope that Philbin really knows this and is just trying to light a fire under his *ss so he gets the most out of him.

Reshad Jones sucks, I thought he sucked last year and he has done nothing in two preseason games to change my mind. He never seems to be around the ball when it's in the air and he's always late making a tackle. This team is in desperate, desperate need of a playmaking safety or hell even an average one. I still do have a little hop for Jimmy Wilson though as he seems to be around the ball more but I think he needs more time and experience at the position.

If we've learned anything through these two preseason games it's that without Cam Wake opposing offenses will be able to bring a lunch in the huddle and after the snap will have time to unwrap it, eat all of it, then recycle the paper and plastic before they have to throw the ball. If Wake goes down this season we might as well wrap it up because no pass rush + bad safety play = Disaster!

All in all I think this team has a long ways to go. I think Tannehill will be good and I want to see him play but honestly if they choose to sit him this year I wouldn't be mad. I mean I'd like to hope that having a rough season wouldn't shake his confidence forever but man... unless something is there that I really don't see these WR's and J. Martin will make it tough for a QB to have a successful season. All of this being said though the blind homer in me still has hope that we Could be around an 8 win team lol.

Our safeties are garbage. I would prefer to have Marshall as a safety and start Davis. Overall it just seems like our secondary is a bunch of clowns. None of the starters seem like smart disciplined individuals.

Man, remember when we had Madison, Surtain, Marion, and Knight in the backfield? Dehm, those were great days.

Fireland?

Vontea Davis played lights out tonight and I agree he played like a true #1 CB. He was all over Smith and Smith was getting frustrated. Then as soon as Sean Smith was put on Steve Smith, Smith started getting the better of us. If this coaching staff thinks Sean Smith is our true #1, then we are in for a long year...I also agree Davis may have been out of shape, but you couldnt tell from this second preseason game.

I agree about Vontae, but why the Sean Smith hate?? He played well, considering he had to cover for 7-8 seconds per pass play due to Cam Newton being touched once all night. He made a great play on the INT and the refs took it away. Even the pass he gave up was man coverage with no safety help over the top, and Smith ran a comeback route, pushed off (legal), and Sean lost his footing from the push. I think the lack of playmaking safety hurts the CBs, as its hard for them to gamble on a pick, when they have little confidence their safetys will be in position to make the tackle.

I'm pretty pissed at the way the team keeps performing, but I have to say Clemons and Davis have showed they're already in season form tonight. They're the only solid DB's playing back there right now. Clemons as I expected has been the most consistent of all the DB's from camp to now.

Smith with Jones in the backfield will be attacked all season. And if Wake's out ugh... Long year boys

I agree i dont see how he played bad.... had a good pick called back on a terrible call by the ref. We had zero pass rush the whole game. Vernon was very disappointing last night. I think our CBs will we fine its the safeties that will be bad. But it doesnt matter unless we get a pass rush. The best CBs in the league cant cover for 6-7 seconds. Eventually someone will get open.

I don't think that was a bad call. He held Smith which was the only reason he didn't get beat, granted it may have been under thrown anyway. I agree about Davis, this coaching staff needs to forget about practice and go with reality in some cases. This is one of hose cases as Vontae Davis is our best CB.

I strongly disagree with the penalty. He used the arm bar but didnt hinder Steve smith from getting to the ball. He has just as much right to the position as the WR, especially when he was in position to begin with. The good CBs do this often. watch some Revis tape and you'll see what I mean.

Your crazy Steve Smiths only saving grace was the PI-call he was given. Smith did a hell of a job on him and had the count the INT...it would have been decisively a good game for him.

One name in the title does not belong.. 2 quality NFL players and then the worst starting safety in the league.

People are being overly harsh on Sean in this thread. He had a brilliant pick erased by a completely bull**** call.

Getting a reality check Mateo?

Vontae DEF. needs to be the starter - again, this staff needs to stop with the cult of personality and play the best players. Smith looked pretty good to me though - IMO jones is a huge liability.

after we put in clemmons with bell in 2010 the big plays on us stopped for the most part. Only when we put resahd jones in with Bell did teams start killing us again. Clemmons/Jones is no good. we need a better safety with Clemmons.

AND that was IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM A Friggen penalty that was a clear cut INT.
