After watching Vontae Davis the last couple of games, I have to say he is going to be an absolute STUD in this league. Comparing him to Sean Smith, I can clearly see that he is going to be the best CB on our team over the long haul. He has all the tools you want in a CB; he is very physical (a fierce tackler), he has great instincts (his reaction is off the charts), and the most rare tool of them all; he has AMAZING recovery speed. Of course, he is still raw and plays too aggressive at times (he's a rookie), but his ceiling is sky high (higher than Sean Smith) and in Will Allen's absence, the playing experience he is gaining is going to increase his skills tremendously.

In the near future, Vontae Davis is going to be the COMPLETE STUD CB our defense sorely needs.

I completely agree he has been playing great. He has made some mistakes but that will happen with any rookie.

Sean smith is no pushover either though... the future is bright for both of these young players.

I would much rather have a rook that is too aggressive than one that is timid.

Exactly, I'm not saying he should be less aggressive at all. Sometimes he's too aggressive and has to play a little smarter. For example:

Last week when Cotchery had that 50+ yard reception after Ted Ginn's 2nd KR TD; Davis was trailing Cotchery on a crossing route, instead of going for the tackle as Cotch caught the ball, he went for the ball instead. If you watch the replay, it was clearly obvious he had no chance at the ball, so he should of made sure he made the tackle instead of selling out for the pick. As a result, the Jets scored a TD two plays later.

That's all I'm saying.

I LOVE aggressive, physical CBs. I like CBs, such as (just to name a few) , Assante Samuel, Nate Clements, Darrell Revis, and the emergence of last year's rookie CB, Cortland Finnegan. These guys are aggressive, and very physical CBs with great recovery speed.

You're right, the future is bright for both of our CBs, and I never said Smith was a pushover; I like Sean Smith too, but I see unlimited potential in Davis. I made this thread because I always envisioned physical CBs with recovery speed for this team, and I am excited to see that we have one in Davis. Vontae Davis has all the tools to be a stud at that position; Davis' recovery speed and instinct gives him the ability to become a playmaker at that position.

This is not a knock on Sean Smith thread; this is a what we have in Vontae Davis thread.

The character concerns surrounding Vontae were completely unfounded. He's been one of the hardest working guys on the field for our defense. Remember that huge return the Saints had on us? Vontae chased that guy down after being blocked and got the shoestring tackle to save the TD. We held them to a FG. I love this guy's hustle.

Thank God for those Character concerns huh? Fell right into our laps.
Wonder if Ireland had anything to do with the rumors hmmmm?

Oh ya I know, I was just pointing it out

Davis tried to tackle Shockey high in the game against NO. Should have been a 15 yard gain but the miss cost us another 30 yards. He need to improve this also. Stop gambling and make the sure tackle. When you are ahead as in both instances you have to play situational football and make them beat you with a long drive. He was going for the knockout int vs Jets and probably thinking he could cause a fumble vs Shockey. Just get em to the ground and play for the next play.

I'm a sucker for physical CB's that tackle and can play press coverage.....

Smith's skillset is more that of a boundary corner.....he's great at matching up with taller receivers.....flipping his hips and running in a straight line....

It's obvious that he struggles when guys stab their foot in the ground and cross his face.....he has to take false steps to re-gather himself...

It would be nice if Vontae's physical nature rubbed off on Smith......he still plays with a little bit of an offensive players mentality....particularly when it comes to tackling.....he needs to break down more in his technique IMO and use his arms less.....you're not going to make many arm tackles in the NFL......

...unless it's.....well you know....

Probably some of Vontae's "character issues" arose from the rep of his knucklehead older brother in SF. However, from Day One Vontae has never been a problem.
