Vontae is sending the wrong message to his teammates, becoming a cancer?

You pick up slack once you are a team. Right now they're guys trying to earn a job. I wouldn't have hung around Davis it her talking that crap on national television.

I agree, but you wouldn't like it if the player your always picking up slack for does this for four straight years. Not saying Davis is a lazy guy, but I mean come on. You, as a professional ball player can't come into camp in good shape?? Not even one year? That has to get under some teammates skin especially when the past staff used to give him the starting spot for just showing up. Kid has SO much talent and could be top 5 in this league easily. Maybe this small demotion will be what he needed to wake up and dig deeper.

Vontae is guilty of poor conditioning and really a lack of focus....but to say he is a Cancer I would say no. Coaches need to stay on top of him and he will be fine. Maybe another phone call from Grandma may help as well.

Have you read vd's twitters over the pass 3 years all he talks about is food..he's a guy that now with money he loves eating anything and everything..but game time he shows up..our best tackler!

You assume that players don't hold each other accountable. They do. Trust me, if another player had a problem with a teammate I guarantee he would say something. We may not hear it, but it happens all the time.

I'm sure they do, but whatever was said to him by any of his teammates definitely hasn't been listened to by Vontae. Look how he came into camp.

I think Philbin really got into his head by demoting him. I think we all know he'll be our starting corner this year, but now for the first time in years, he has to really earn it.

More importantly, his teammates arent listening to his message which was evident when Jones looked at him like he was thinking, "STFU and get your a** into shape, dude!"

You see Clemons just walk away from him? Vontea its on the radar for sure to bad he made himself look like such a idiot ruining his trade bait!

So the first episode of Hard Knocks finally exposed "vontae davis-gate" and showed us why he was demoted. For those of you who didn't see it Vontae was walking along the sideline and telling players like Reshad Jones that he was tired and was going to "act" like he wasn't tired, he was acting like a 12 year old. The proof that he was tired and out of shape was when he got smoked by a rookie Jeff Fuller for a touchdown. He also had a little problem with having to go to the bathroom during a walk through, we saw Coach Philbin touch on this. This was the biggest knock on VD coming out of college, all the scouts and experts said his coaches at Illinois had to constantly keep him focused and his mind in the game. Vontae has all the ability in the world to be a top 5 CB in this league be he lacks the mental toughness.

But my point is this, I played football for 10 years of my life all the way from flag to college and I was always considered a leader on my teams, I was a starting Middle Linebacker and a captain, I called the plays on my defense and always motivated my teammates to push harder and dig deep, never once did I send the wrong message to my teammates but Vontae is doing the complete opposite, he is supposed to be a leader by now on this team and an anchor of that defense, but instead he acting like a child and sending the message that its ok to quit and give up on plays and that has been his problem now for 4 years. If he keeps this up he will be a cancer in the lockeroom and it will rub players the wrong way, nobody wants to be on a team with a quitter and thats what Vontae is right now, he better step it up fast or not only will he lose his starting spot he will be shipped outta here!
Agreed. Good teams have players that would not tolerate this type of behavior from a teammate. I hope this is the case here.

As I said right after the 2009 draft, Miami missed the boat when they could've had Clay Matthews instead of Vontae the immature schmuck. Matthews went to the Packers one pick later.

Imagine a young dominant Matthews on one side with Cam Wake on the other attacking QB's & destroying offenses

Reality TV is working its magic on this site I see

Hoowee, thought I was alone!! ... folks watch seasons of NFL & don't seem to get much football at all ... but ONE episode of Hard Knocks ... & we're chock 'a lock full of football knowledge!!

Durn, I didn't get any football out of it at all ... did enjoy it though as a Miami fan. Did get alot of baby mama drama though ... poor rook & Les. Maybe there's football at the Khardasians, too!!

Wow, man, people need to chill about this already. We haven't played one preseason game yet, relax. Vontae is a young guy, he'll be in football shape soon enough with the pace they run practice. He's a good kid, albeit, still immature, but he's not a guy going out and getting in trouble and stuff. Give the guy a break.

Point taken, a lot of people get pretty spun up over their favorite Dolphin controversy of the day - me included.

My rebuttal to what you point out - he gets paid to be in shape. He gets paid to perform, and was drafted in a position that many (myself included) expected a lot more out of him. I actually consider him the better corner betweeen him and Sean Smith, but apparantly Vontae isn't too worked up about this being a contract year. I see this being his last year after he performs to the same level as he has before - mark my words he's gonna ask for STUPID money. I hope he improves, but in my mind he hasn't made enough big plays to warrant being considered elite, I think "Journeyman Cornerback" is about right.
