Okay, so now that preseason is over, I've got a question for you all. We know that we will have a rookie opposite Will Allen in the backfield. Who will it be (provided Vontae's injury isn't that bad)? Will it be Smith, Davis, or maybe even a combination of the two? We need consistency and cohesion as quickly as possible back there and I'm not sure rotating would be the best idea, although it could happen. It seems like Smith has better pass defending skills while Vontae has better tackling skills. What do you all think?

Im not sure.. overall I think Smith is the starter, but they could incorporate both in somehow

Sean Smith is the starter unless he is injured. The question is who will win the nickle and dime position. It will not be Vontae versus the Falcons. I doubt the injury will allow him to be prepared for that game.

Smith is the starter for sure, Davis is good but Smith is better at this point. Davis will be in the nickel spot and we will play nickel alot especially against offenses like atlanta, new england, indiapolis and such

Smith is hands down the starter already, no indication at all of Vontae starting. Jones and Davis will share nickle and dime package duties. Until Vontae beats out Will Allen, he will be a be a back-up.

vontae has looked good but smith has outplayed him thus far. smith has earned the starting job. which may work out for the best because vontae is better suited at the nickel spot because he's much more physical and therefore better against the run - and going after the QB. 1. allen 2. smith 3. davis 4. jones sounds about right.

All I know is, we're going to have a hell of a lot of fun watching these two guys! I still can't believe we got both.

I'm very impressed with both. I think Smith is a lock to start the season as the starter. I am totally sold on both as the future and would not be surprised at all to see W. Allen playing the nickel a year from now and thats not a knock on him it's just how impressed I am w/the 2 rooks.I'm just glad we have depth in the backfield across the board safety included. Linebackers need to step up in pass coverage and shedding blocks in the open field.

I can not see Allen playing nickel. He would be worth more as a trade than as a nickel. If Vontae does step up and take the spot...expect us to look for something for Allen.

Allen played nickel when we had Lehan, when we went to nickle, allen moved inside while Lehan played outside.. until Jones came along and showed he had some skills in the slot.

Since then Allen has become a better defender. I am mainly saying that he is worth more to us in trade value, than as a nickel...I am not saying he can't play it. He would be very good I'm sure...

Ya as posted by others, Smith has won that job hands down. Vontae has played good though too and I feel very confident in both of them going forward. So glad that we got both of them.

You really think they are gonna let him walk out with all that guaranteed money they just gave him? Then they would have to pay who ever they get for him. He would be great in the nickel and would keep us deep at the DB in case of injury. It would also add a couple of prime years to his body and he'd be fresher later in the season and playoffs.

This one was kinda obvious before opening up the thread. #31 all the way.
