Like Wilson’s NFL-record $85 million in dead salary cap charges over the past two seasons, the Dolphins would suffer immensely for the next two years. Not quite on the Broncos' level, but fairly close — to the tune of $79.2 million. The one upside for Miami is that Denver did provide a workable blueprint, designating Wilson a post June 1 release and splitting his $85 million charge over two seasons ($53 million on their 2024 cap and $32 million on the 2025 books). The Dolphins could take the same route with Tagovailoa, putting $62.4 million on the 2026 cap and the remaining $16.8 in 2027.
Your numbers are way wrong.

It’s a $67m dead cap hit in 2026 and $32m hit in 2027 if they cut him post June 1st 2026.

Voted uncertain because I don't know when you want him gone. Cut tomorrow? No.

After we've drafted a first round QB? Sure.

I think the options in 2026 will be Nussmeier, Allar.and Mendoza. Nussmeier has Tua like size, arm and mobility. Allar reminds me of Henne. Mendoza might be interesting but he already has trouble keeping his interceptions down in college.

I think I'd rather see who's available in 2027.
What about LaNorris Sellers?

Outside of the fact that I think we’re stuck with his contract for a couple of years, I think the problem with Tua is that he’s not the answer but there’s also much worse QB’s. I didn’t want Miami to draft him but I’m ok if he stays for another year or two, we draft a QB to learn from him and then move on.

I look at Green Bay’s track record of long, sustained success and they follow that model.

I think we immediately need a new GM and HC and they need to start focusing on building a team so whoever becomes our long term answer at QB, has a chance at success.

Our OL needs to be imposing. We need a front 7 that can win battles at the LOS and not get pushed back 3-4 yards against Buffalo. We also can’t field the worst secondary the NFL has seen in quite some time.

We also have to stop trying to build from the outside in. It just doesn’t work. Drafting Waddle over Sewell, trading for Tyreke is just stupid when your OL sucks. Also, this win now mentality has got to go. We’ve been doing that for decades and all we do is guarantee our future isn’t going to be successful.

Who cares if you are blowing it up and bottoming out?
What does it really matter? Now it would be a different story if we had a quarterback that he was holding back that is the future of the franchise. If one thinks that a 7th round pick is that guy, or if Wilson will have a Mayfield type rebirth. It'd be different if Ewers was in year 2, but even if that was the case no team would take that cap hit for the sake of just not having the guy on the team.

Smart teams would let it play, start the potential future QB, and sit the overpriced contract that was a mistake.

But regardless if either one is the case, the cap hit we'd take does no good for the future of this team compared to the so-called good of cutting Tua at all costs.

I don’t think these are really similar aside from a ton of cap. The writing on the wall for Wilson was years in the making he was steadily declining and he was 36. Even if he had turned it around there’s not much left in the tank.

Tua on the other hand is only 27 and even in these last three games which have been the roughest of his career is still far above where Wilson was. Imagine the optics if we cut him, gain nothing then he signs with a team with a solid roster and competent coach like the Rams if Stafford retires then goes on to be their qb for the next half a decade. I also don’t like this qb class much and by cutting Tua you are forcing yourself to take a qb in what might be a subpar draft then playing him on a bad team potentially ruining his development.

Too many variables depending on who you hire as a head coach and gm. Do you want a first year head coach developing a rookie qb? Is this a scrap everything full rebuild or are you building off pieces?

It should be up to a new general manager and coach to decide Tua's fate. I personally think we are in the Ryan Tannehill stage of his career where we have reached his ceiling and there is nothing more he can prove - and I assume new leadership would see the same thing. But since bad QB contracts are being given out like Halloween candy these days, we are likely stuck with him through the end of 2026 unless a team is really keen on taking on that albatross of a contract.
