I was reading another post about the changes to the team the organization plans to make and all of the comments were around the fact that they plan to upgrade the guard play..... But I'm more concerned with this little tidbit

Tight end: The front office still likes Jordan Cameron and will consider keeping him but with a lowering of his $7.5 million salary and $9.5 million cap hit, possibly through an extension.

But that decision won’t be made for a while, and Gase will have input on that and other offensive decisions after he reviews game tape (though Tannenbaum, with Grier's assistance, has final say).

Didn't they just tell us that GASE would have final say over the 53 man roster??? Did I miss something? How does that work anyway? Front office signs a guy to lets say a 3 year 25 Million dollar contract, Gase sees him practice and decides he's not good enough.... Can Gase cut him? What about the salary cap implications of that?

Somebody please splain!!!!! :err:

From what I understand, Gase has control over the final 53, but getting to the final 53 falls on Tannebaum/Grier.

Grier/Tannenbaum with a little input from Gase on who to draft and FA signings. Then Gase decides who is on the 53 man roster. Gase will put the best players on the field. doesn't mean they are good players, but the best we have.

at least that's how I see it.

Gase's responsibility will mainly be who starts and/or who is on the active gameday roster. In the words of another poster here, "He's in charge of whether or not Sam Brenner suits up for the game".

Gase has control of the final the 53 internally and who plays, starts and practice squad etc.... Grier and Tannenbaum have final say over draft and free agents and who is brought in externally

So if Tannbaum\Grier signs a FA like let's say Phillip Wheeler to the same contract he had when he was here, Gase goes through OTA's and Pre Season and says..... "Hey this guy sucks" can he cut him? If so, how does that affect the salary cap? I'm sorry but with this organization I'm questioning EVERYTHING. I know it all sounds good in theory but how practical is it real life??

I guess my general question is, in a league with a salary cap, how can a HC have final say only on the 53 man roster but not final say over who is signed in the first place.....

Realistically, a coach is not going to cut a player that we owe lots of money too without them being an enormous failure. The bottom of your 53 will generally be minimum guys or vets on small contracts. Bottom line, they have to work together.

They talked a lot before he was hired, it's possible that Gase was asked about what he thought about the roster and he may have told them he likes Cameron (like any competent offensive coordinator would) and hopes to use him in his scheme. He's probably smart enough to put Cameron in a good position for him to be open and for tannehill to be able to find him. Crazy huh?

I like how all of these front office tidbits are put out, but realistically nobody really knows anything at this point on what the front office likes or doesnt like

I would like to at least see Cameron used properly before we totally give up on him but his game did look really sloppy at times last year

This isn't a question abou Jordan, it's about the concept of a coach having final say over only the 53 man roster but not final say over players that we sign to begin with. If the FO gives big money to a guy that ends up not being very good... Gase can't just cut him? So does he REALY have final say??

While Gase has a lot of staff decisions to make, he also was granted more organizational power than Philbin had with the Dolphins. Miami head executive Mike Tannenbaum and general manager Chris Grier will run the NFL draft and free agency, but Gase will have final say over who makes the roster.

That was important to Tannenbaum, according to a source, because he believed there were past problems in Miami with management making the roster decisions. Now, players will know that they have to answer to Gase, and not management.
