Walker: Hickey received offers to trade down at 19 but wanted to stay to pick James

No but it has been substantiated
@Dick_Guzinya I can confirm Eda's tweet is 100% correct. If #Fins didn't get James at 19 they would have missed out on him.

@Mike_OxslongESPN disputing this though. Says the Cardinals were going to trade down no matter what.

@Phil_muhcreviceCBS I'm told Hickey had James over Zack Martin and was going to make sure he got him

@Haywood_Giblome counters that and says the Phins were reaching around taking James at 19 because there was no oral commitment to take James by any team before 27.

I don't see how Hickey can be blamed at this point for refusing a trade down if he had such a high conviction on James. The real problem is that that piece of **** Jeff Ireland has placed Hickey in a situation where he has to find 4 new OL starters + quality OL backup depth. Hickey was placed in a position where he could not afford to take any risks in his attempt to keep Jeff Ireland's QB upright. For Hickey to be faulted for trying his best to clean up his predecessor's mess is ludicrous at this point.

No oral commitment? Who does that in the ultimate poker game

Yeah I know he is a pure RT and that is why I wanted him in Buffalo. But unless he gets stronger at the point of attack I see him making his career in the NFL on the left side. That is why I am saying right now he projects better as a LT in the NFL, because he is not your typical RT, more finese and lacks power at point of attack.

yep...game looks more suited for the left side over the long haul...so in a way i guess that should add to his value...we may have found our left tackle for after albert either kicks inside down the road or is released

games definitely more left tackleish with james...left tackle like feet also...just not left tackle like move athlete

I totally agree. Why would New Orleans want to trade up with Miami when 1) trading up to 20 is cheaper than trading up to 19 and 2) New Orleans knows with 100% conviction that the Dolphins have a 0% chance of selecting the player they are targeting? To say that New Orleans' trading up with Miami is equivalent to their trading up with Arizona is shortsighted.

It's not a fact. Until we know the details in the TWO offers, what you are suggesting at this point is nothing more than opinion.

Dion Jordan. Mike Wallace. Two dares last season. How'd they work out?

You don't have anywhere near the credibility you are pretending to have. How do we know that your picks wouldn't have been worse?

i have no idea why you are coming after me over this one pick but i'm game if you want to...and i've called just about every bad pick this teams made recently...exception being gillislee last year...epic fail on my part...i can tell ya this though if i was gm dez bryant would be a dolphin, mark ingram would be a dolphin, ryan tannehill would be a dolphin, lane johnson in the trade up would be a dolphin...my targets at each pick

and guys like mike egnew, will davis, dallas thomas those guys weren't even on my board...

that said i don't think james is a bad pick how many times i got to say that his pass pro is plug and play ready even if his run game is very unimpressive...i just said if hickey had stones he would have dropped to 27 and picked us up an extra pick...i dont buy any james would have gone in front of us stuff...

You have no idea if this is true or not. You can say it as many times as you would like, but it doesn't mean anything.

It all comes down to how he performs. If he is a solid RT for us, it is a good pick. Everything else is nonsense and idle talk at this point. So easy to be right when you can't be proven wrong.

Nitpick:

#19 overall, he needs to be a great RT for us to be a good pick.

you like to just fight about anything...gnaw at someone like a dog on a bone...

i doubt you are getting a well rounded one...but who knows maybe benton can coach him up...he's not gonna make him into a move athlete...thats got 10 foot box tackle written all over it...and tests better than the athlete you see on tape...

we could have us an nfl tweener...guy made to play on the left side but lacks the athleticism and doesnt develop the upper body strength to play a high end right tackle...guess we will find out...i dont like the thought of kicking it inside

That's the whole truth in one paragraph. And the reason why I'm okay w. this.
