Walter Football: 4 Coordinators getting HC Buzz

Funny how these things almost always work.

You hear what these coaches have done as coordinators, and there is little if anything said about them that helps you believe they wouldn't be promoted to their level of incompetence as head coaches.

In this article it's only this:

Pagano seems to have that "leader of men" quality that is so important for head coaches in the NFL.

well you can't see how incompetent they are until they get the chance can you?

Wasn't Chudzinski a OC candidate for us this offseason or was Daboll the only loser we interviewed?

Chud's name was thrown out but I don't know if we interviewed him. It seemed pretty inevitable that he was going to Carolina when Rivera was named HC. We interviewed Daboll and Jason Garrett's brother for sure

our bnext coach will be a guy that used to play for Dallas and is friends with tuna

Ozzy rules!!

Right, but wouldn't you like to see an article that takes a look at what it takes for a coordinator to become successful as a head coach and then applies that to the coordinators it's discussing?

Instead you just hear about what they've done as coordinators, knowing full well there have been many, many coordinators who have flopped as head coaches regardless of their performance as coordinators, so the article really tells you nothing.

Well, with Zimmer he's a guy whose been a VERY good DC for a while. His players have always played very well. Zimmer is long overdue for a chance at being HC.

Chud is getting a lot of credit for being innovative and putting Cam in the best places to succeed.

Now Olson and Pagano are both worth mentioning. Olson has done a lot of good things with a VERY young offense. Pagano I'm more hesitant just because of how many DCs have been great at Baltimore.

The "Ray Lewis Effect" IMO.

Again, another reason it's so difficult to project coordinators into head coaching positions. You never know how much their success as coordinators has been based on their players.

How good of a coordinator is Tom Moore, for example? Can anyone really say?

Really IMO a great head coach is a guy who knows the psyche of players and the culture of teams, and applies that knowledge to the development of player leadership and a winning team culture.

He can do all that while he hires good coordinators to do the technical Xs and Os stuff he used to do.

The success at Xs and Os takes a distant backseat once a guy becomes head coach IMO. At that point it's primarily about organizational behavior, management, and leadership, and secondarily about game management.

What about Jay Gruden the OC from the bengals, he used to be a HC for some Orlando team which is a plus that he has HC experience. I say if we can't get his brother here, this guy would be an excellent catch especially with what he's done with Dalton.

Wanted to add, Chud was on the hot track for a head coaching position a few years ago. After the 2007 season, in which he was the Browns offensive coordinator and helped Derek Anderson get to the Pro-bowl, rumors started floating around that he could make the jump soon.
Unfortunately, the Browns fell apart and Romeo Crennel was fired and Mangini cleaned house.

Whenever a coach has as much success as Chud has had with quarterbacks, his name will come up. That being said, Nublar is right. Ross hasn't exactly hidden the fact that he is going with someone who has former head coaching experience. Personally, id love for us to look into Chud, but dont think its even a remote possibility.
